BESERAKUP KITAI TEGUH, BEPECAH KITAI LABUH!

BESERAKUP KITAI TEGUH, BEPECAH KITAI LABUH!

Written by gkm2020

Whatever happened to the spirit of ‘Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban’

We are great Natives! Our ancestors are great warriors. We are the first peoples of Borneo. For many years before this country was formed, our ancestors who sleep on this land were a very well known fierce and gruesome headhunters to the rest of the world.

Almost every longhouse was served with human skulls. But we are not our father great fathers; our espirit-de-coup, braveness and courage have long been gone. Why? The world has changed but have You change yet?

We are not BN. We are not PR. We are the ‘Bansa Dayak’, we are the citizens, we are the taxpayers and we are the voters, and it is time we start acting that way. We do not need to be concerned about what each party is doing to help themselves. We should be concerned of what can we do to protect our Native rights (Hak Bangsa Dayak), and empower our next generation survivability and sustainability.

Why must we Unite and Reconcile to vote for Change?

There is nothing wrong with voicing opinions here in this ruai, as long as they are taken as opinions, because everyone has an opinion about something and for something.

My opinion is simple. When are we going to stop putting our peoples down with “Kapapas Mentality” (bedengki ka pangan diri, kapapas ka bansa diri, melakang ka bansa diri, ngemeli ka bansa diri, nipu bansa diri, mecah-belah bansa diri, nyabong bansa diri, bemunsoh enggau bansa diri,) and start working as a true Dayak again?

“Beserakup” means different things to different people and by including different views we hope that young people have an opportunity to make up their own minds about what “Beserakup” is and why it is important to Dayak. This is an important time for each of us to be honest about our Dayaks’ condition.

In its broadest sense “Beserakup” means coming together. It is the term used to refer to the bringing together the Sea Dayaks, Land Dayaks, Orang Ulu and Kadazan-dusun under “Dayak”. Supporting “Beserakup” means working to overcome the reasons there is division and inequality between Indigenous (Native) and non-Indigenous.

Enough of lies, denials, discrimination, marginalization, oppression, sideline and injustice; to stay alive, “Beserakup” needs more than just goodwill or just talking. It also requires your active contribution, high moral values and financial support. If you can contribute to God and can we not contribute to our Dayak’s cause?

The aims to deliver real outcomes for “Beserakup” is through forging innovative partnerships and mutual support to: achieve political strength, social and economic equity, and honoring of the Dayak’s Aum Kapit 1962 Resolutions, Adat, Native Court and Indigenous Rights; strengthen the Dayak’s movement for reconciliation; facilitate constructive discussion on native’s rights; and build a framework for a shared future. So what is Dayak possible platform to mobilize “Beserakup”?

We are here not to win the Chief Minister Post, we are here to win our Dayaks’ cause!

We need to be concerned with our Dayaks’ indigenous rights. We need to be concerned of our children and their next generation. We need to start being concerned about what our elected YBs are doing to help the Dayaks.

Recently: About 500 Ibans of Rumah Ranggong in Ulu Niah “Beserakup” and surrounded and “detained” 22 individuals believed to be “gangsters” allegedly sent by a renowned timber concessionaire to intimade and frighten them. For further reading: 22 gangsters detained

I am so sick of the double standard policies, corruption and injustice, watching the rich elites get richer while the poor society gets poorer via ‘politics of dibolotmen’, and the many natives’ issues. This state/country is not made of one individual or one family and/or one faction. The state is made of the people, by the people and for the people.

It is the responsibility of every Dayak to teach, create awareness, motivate, promote and to practice unity among its members. It is said that ‘the longhouse is the first teacher of a rural Dayak’s child’.

To transform ourselves to the next level, we must Change our old culture model of living and habits from “lantang senang nguan menua” (menua enti diduan aja sigi nadai nemu mansang) to “lantang senang ngemansang ka menua” (menua enti dikamansang kitai, kitai tau senang belama); sustainable growth, capacity building and development through socio-economics and political transformation, adaptation and unity (work for peace by building relationship of trust and comradeship) .

Disharmony and discord can be overcome in a number of ways when Dayaks and non-natives work with each other on simple or difficult projects, come together to better understand and learn about the history of division and oppression, and become aware of the ways of transition and contributions of our forefathers and our today generation relationships. But to have the type of race relations that are based upon understanding, respect and mutual action, all levels and sectors of the general Malaysian society need to be involved too.

To be involved requires knowledge, passion for understanding, fighting hatred and mutual respect. This “Beserakup” vision should be based upon the need to recognize the essential dignity of every person, the need to build a national commitment towards recognition of the just and equitable positions that the native indigents of this country aspire to in the political, economic, cultural and civil domains.

With this in mind, when the Dayaks are united, then the members will be able to transfer this unity in order to function effectively in society, since unity is a social fabric by which we fulfill our functions here on earth as gregarious creatures.

We must empower our “Dayak Brotherhood”: ‘Begulai Kitai Menang, Carut Kitai Kalah’

“Dayak Brotherhood” is a phenomenon which involves friends working together as brothers, in peace and harmony. Inter-conflict among Dayaks will never bring any progress, productivity and prosperity to Dayaks. Dayaks must build ‘brotherhood principle’ for Change if they want to be at par with others and remain competence.

Together we can Change our world; if you and I can work together we can make the world a better place. It is all about you and me, a reality that we all must come to, and this explains that you need me and I also need you to survive.

This Election can be won, with maximum success if we work and stand together, and help each other achieve our collective goals, maximizing our united potential in the process victoriously.

At this particular time with the wind for change, “Beserakup Kitai Teguh, Bepecah Kitai Labuh” (United we stand, Divided we fall) should be the motto of every Dayak.

We have seen and/or heard so much about Dayaks’ indigenous issues. People are being depressed, oppressed, suppressed and don’t know how to cope with their issues. Some have become landless, homeless, jobless and pro-poor.

If all the Dayaks are indeed united, what affects one will affect all, therefore, each member will be able to contribute tangibly, or intangibly to assist in decreasing or eliminating the stress of the affected member.

It is during these crucial times that the strength of the bond of each Dayak is being tested. If the bond is weak, or if there is division and/or disunity, then without a doubt, the victim of this election is doomed.

When unity is established within the Dayaks, it also reverberates throughout the community, and creates the spirit of togetherness and oneness, so that everyone unites in developing or implementing plans and, or visions or objectives from which all can be benefited.

When are we going to take this energy used to prove a point and turn it around for positive use?

Yes, we may have our differences, but diversity is what made this country. Mutual respect and compromise is what makes this country great. Can we work as a team to win our native rights?

We are not perfect. Because we recognize that fact, we must try to fix our very problems and find solutions to it. We do not fix problems by constantly pointing out differences or trying to prove we are right all the time.

Fixing matters relating to Dayak needs unity. If unity is the lifestyle of every Dayak, then the greed to hoard will be reduced drastically, and possibly be eliminated.

People will appreciate each other for who they are and for what they can contribute to the development of the society, and realize that unity is the foundation for development of any family, community or society or nation.

Conclusion

We are Dayaks. It does not matter what religion and/or ethnic background we are from. Under the word, “Dayak”, we are one people and it is time to stand united, not divided.

It’s about time WE vote to win our rights back as the First Peoples of Borneo. In unity and with a little more effort, we can change our world.

Our New Order: ‘Beserakup Kitai Teguh, Bepecah Kitai Labuh’; can we do it?

Yes, Change WE Must!

Yes, Dayaks are to be united in SNAP, because PRS and SPDP are multi-racial parties while Pesaka is a servant of Parti Bumiputera.

  2. Ben Numpang on January 17th, 2011 6:31 am

Instead of focusing on political divisions and attaining political power, which I gather is the subtext behind this article. I feel that the energies of the Dayak elite would be better spent focusing on lifting the educational standards of Dayak children.

Too much political energy is spent in Malaysia in highlighting and emphasizing racial divisions which is poisonous to efforts to maintain racial harmony. It would be best if that energy is refocused on basic things like education, security and economic development

These are the words I respect:

    1. “Dayak Brotherhood” – I hope you and me print this word in our T-Shirt and use it around so that the mood of brotherhood and berserakup start to build up.

    2. We are not BN. We are not PR. We are the ‘Bansa Dayak’. – Let those in politic knows that they are Bansa Dayak not belong to BN or PR.

    3. So what is Dayak possible platform to mobilize “Beserakup”? – You may choose SNAP, PR, BN, UBF, DBF or SDNU the most as our platform but I choose MYSELF.

    4. We need to start being concerned about what our elected YBs are doing to help the Dayaks. – If you see Dayak YB are doing nothing to protect Dayak Right and fight for Dayak Cause, vote him out.

    5. 22 gangster captured. – I hope anyone can get the picture and I will bring them show to the world how the rich elite from Malaysian gomen rope the poor Dayak.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

“I am so sick watching the rich elites get richer while the poor society gets poorer,” Tu salah sentences. I

Iya ke betul, “I am so sick watching the rich elites BN rope the poor Dayak.”

    Hi Kaban Semua,

What the heck, instead of helping the Dayaks PKR Malaya not only bullied but made them poorer. A point to ponder….. esp. among “PKR blind followers”.

    1) PKR Malaya asked Baru Bian to handle all NCR court case…fine!.But do they know BB also incurred cost in the process? He has family to feed, he has fixed cost to settle…..PKR Malaya never contribute financially…..hence not so serious in their cause & struggle. According to BB, he has to folk out from his own pocket even to pay for PKR office’s rental.

    2) Patrick Saging has been tasked by PKR Malaya to do this and to do that….hence the need to fly to Malaya regularly. He was promised that all his expenses (including air ticket & accommodation) will be reimbursed by Malaya. But when he brought his stakes of air-ticket to claim he was told the party has no more fund. He was advised instead to stay in a lodging house while in KL…..he said enough is enough, he resigned but already poorer by few thousand ringgit.

    3) Paul Kandang suffered the agony of not receiving his pay check for six months. Was told he was left with no choice but to resign as PKR deputy secretary general. And you know living in KL is not cheap…….PKR Malaya see it fit to withhold staff remuneration…dammed it!!!!!

    4) Mengga Mikui confided that thus far he has spent 100K going around the Tamin constituency doing his pre-election campaign. Fund pledges by PKR Malaya is not forthcoming despite the promised of imbursement.
”Maybe for the next 100k I can afford ….I am in dilemma, and my family begin asking me whether I am doing the right things or not” lamented Mngga whom I met in Sibu fortnight ago. He claimed that he used to spend quite a bit on entertainment esp. pup and karaoke but now circumstances forced him to slow down and changed his lifestyle.

    5) Potential PKR candidate for Krian, Ali Biju claimed that thus far he spent almost 200K both in the constituency and also financing party activities else where. He also has seconds though whether to go ahead with his plan to contest the coming polls. “Lucky I am still a bachelor …..I can afford to be “broke” and prepared for it” uttered Ali Biju.
He is particularly concerned that his business contracts with Petronas (where he made a bit on money) may be terminated if he is to proceed with his plan.

    To be continued………

    Nya aja kaban.

    KABAN DBs,
We need to project the fearsome and gruesome attributes of our ancestors to our political foes if our worthless struggle falls into a deaf ear.

We must resolve the unity crisis among the dayaks community fast or else we might be loosing our pride, identity and respect in the eyes of other races. We will be victims to the rule hypocrisy and oppression for another decade. Anyway, keep up the momentum kaban for a better tomorrow.

    I’m saddened,

    Akih Hawong,

Seems to me that you are good to do under cover job to collect information regarding the weaknesses and the strategies of Pakatan Rakyat. James Jemut Masing must be proud of you.

Whether the four personalities above deliberately revealed problems to you or you got the information by other means is inmaterial, the reality is you can mix around with them freely even though they know pretty well that you are not in the same boat with them.

I believe there are some truth in your information judging from the experience encountered by PKR`s candidates in 2006 election where each candidate was promised with a large sum of money to be used for campaign prior to the election, but at the end each of them was only given RM2,900 only. Most of PKR`s candidates were frustrated. I knew this story because I was in the group.

  10. Kerani Opis Welfare on January 17th, 2011 1:17 pm

based on akih hawong report about the potential PKR candidates of the past and present, there seem to be a “curse” of back luck attached or goes with its. just look at the fate of patrick saging and paul kadang. not only they are frustated but made poorer by a few $. man! the world must be upside down.

GKM2020, are you sure the kepapas mentality is so widespread among bansa Dayak that it is worth mentioning? Pls give evidence or examples of this. I don’t like to think of this negative element but it has been said repeatedly in public speeces. In a way, reference to it repeatedly is also spreading this mentality among Dayak people themselves.

Is this kepapas mentality the main root cause of Dayak disunity as it is at the present state?

How do we propose to erase this kepapas mentality if it really exists?

I thought Dayak disunity now is more related to the quest for each individual survival espacially in the economic sense. So all-inclusive Dayak’ cause is not really on the main course of these individuals.

I read one article which claims somebody as traitor to Dayaks (which I don’t like to mention) but wasn’t he really ngiga pemakai kediri empu?

Will adverse conditions like replacing the current BN Swak govt really mobilize or galvanize the Dayak unity towards a common goal? For Malays in Malaya, fighting against Malayan Union did unite them agaianst a common cause.

Who will become a true great leader like Datuk Onn Jaafar? Even Tun Jugah (with due respect) on hindsight was a follower to the formation of Msia. It appears he and all pengulus were merely signatories to a great agreement. His speech just likened formation of Msia to a marriage ceremony when he said “anang baka tebu, manis ba pun, tabar ba ujung”.

    TO-DAY IN HISTORY:

I wrote in a strongly worded statement one and half year ago in this blog that
it written on the wall the PKR Malaya will not (and never been) able to get the mandate from the Dayaks community. Today I may be on the right side of history in witnessing:

    1) Mass exodus of Dayaks leaders/members from PKR to SNAP
    2) SNAP appears determine to go it alone by contesting in all the 28 Dayaks majority seats in the coming polls.

    Nya aja kaban.

  13. Mulai Ka Pengingat on January 17th, 2011 5:25 pm

    DB,

Perlu diingatkan.

    Attention: Kaban js@kbn & all

    Notes:

    • Another name for “Prinsip Kapapas” is “Prinsip Kaban-Makai-Kaban”, and
    • An alternative to “Mistrust Mentality” is “Fear Mentality” (Prinsip Takut Keleput).

Let me hints you some little historical evidences:

The 1st evidence of “Mistrust Mentality” (Kapapas ); began during the tribal war between Dayak Ibans and Dayak Kantuks (who were related to each other) and then follows by other tribal wars in Borneo.

The 2nd evidence of “Mistrust Mentality” (Kapapas); when Rentap @Libau (Iban Skrang) was betrayed and regarded as traitor by his own Dayak Ibans of Lingga, the Undup Ibans and the Sebuyau who fought for Brooke Dynasty during the “Battle of Bukit Sadok”; others include the “Saribas , Sebuyau, Undup and Paku Dayaks Warfares”. For further reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iban_history

The 3rd evidence of “Mistrust Mentality” (Kapapas); when Dayak Iban 51 Chiefs from 3rd Division passed the “Aum Kapit 1962 Resolutions” without any representation of Dayak Iban Chiefs from 2rd Division (Simanggang), and other Dayak ethnics (Bidayuhs, Kayans, Kenyahs, Penan, Punans, Kelabits, Bisayahs, Kedayans, Muruts, etc) were almost left out completely to agree or disagree on the proposed scheme to form the Independent Federation of Malaysia (IFM – later known as “MALAYSIA”) with 3S: Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak.

The 4th evidence of “Mistrust Mentality” (Kapapas); why an educated Stephen Kalong Ningkan (1st President of SNAP/ 1st Sarawak CM) was not invited to sign the Malaysia Agreement on 9th July 1963 instead of Temenggong Jugah? Did Temenggong Jugah officially and/or legally represent the Dayak Ibans from Simanggang and other Dayaks of Sarawak? Why the Dayak Ibans Chiefs from Simanggang not invited to Aum Kapit 1962? My guess: “anang baka tebu, manis ba pun, tabar ba ujung”.

    The present evidences:

    • Wonder how Stephen Kalong Ningkan was dismissed from his CM post?
    • Wonder why Party Pesaka Anak Sarawak (PESAKA) never wants to reconcile with Sarawak National Party (SNAP) until today? The history of SK Ningkan who formed SNAP and Thomas Kana who formed PESAKA started the seeds of disunity among the Dayak Ibans of Sarawak principally between the Ibans of Batang Rajang and the Iban of Saribas.
    • Wonder how SNAP and/or PBDS sunken, rocked and split?
    • Wonder how Dayaks remains underdeveloped for the last 47 years? Why no sound/action from Dayak YBs?
    • Wonder how Dayaks being assimilated into “Bumiputras Agenda”?
    • Wonder what is the percentage owned by Dayaks within the 30% Bumiputra economics equity provisions?
    • Wonder why our Dayak YBs could not agree to unite under one single party like the UMNO/MCA/MIC. If UMNO can control Putrajaya, why can’t Dayaks control Petrajaya?
    • Wonder why our Dayak associations or clubs or NGOs or cooperatives could not unite under one umbrella?

I have plenty to Wonders here……

    “Mistrust Mentality”
is supposedly a consequence of our past actions, conflicts and/or hatred which is hard to forget and forgive, and “fears”.

It is in fact, a consequence of a complex set of beliefs, perceptions, associations, assumptions and interpretations. “Mistrust Mentality” is usually more difficult to deal with than simple absence of Trust.

Without Trust, words become the hollow sound of a “tawak”. With Trust, words become life itself.

Trust is fragile, sensitive and crucial. Trust is to believe in the honesty, integrity, justice, faith, committed, mandate, hope, etc. Without it we’re unable to move forward and progress well; without Trust we cannot protect and defend our Native rights and our future generation sustainability.

    Now think about the people around you;

    • Do you have the state of readiness with any of them?
    • Do you trust your own relatives, your own longhouse/village community, your business colleagues, your boss or your banker or your lawyer or your Tuai Rumah/Penghulu/Pemancha/Temenggong/Counsilors/DO/Resident?
    • Do you trust PELITA/SALCRA/SLDA as your primary trustee to develop your NCR lands?
    • Do you trust your YBs?
    • What about your relationship partner, is there trust there?
    • Do you trust yourself?
    • Do you live in a world of trust?

    If you’re willing to take risks;

    • To share a hard truth and face a reality
    • To confront others and take feedback
    • To share accountability with others
    • To engage in healthy solution-driven conflict

Then you do, indeed, live in a world where there is an abundance of Trust.

If, however, you are afraid to speak up (and for those YBs in the Parliament/DUN); to confront where required; to tell the truth; to seek the truth; to hold yourself and others accountable then you live in a world without trust. It is a world rife with dysfunction and confusion.

Lack of Trust increases the prevalence of lower productivity, missed deadlines, failed missions, and even health problems.

If we build “Beserakup”, we can build our confidence, oneness, courage, skill and share values.

Therefore “Beserakup” is our Vision to build and empower Dayak Unity and Reconciliation, so we can become more progressive and competence like others in all aspects of development.

Leka ka ditu dulu penemu aku, ila nyambong baru. TQ

I am so interested to find out the answers in your questions under the caption ” The present evidences ” of which you know pretty well of the facts, I guess. Will you present the facts here, please.

  18. Iban Abroad on January 18th, 2011 9:08 am

    DB,

Berserakup and Kepapas are like God and Devil. If you are in Berserakup group you have to fight against kepapas also in other way.

Beserakup and kepapas are two natural attitude of human being, you and me cannot deny or avoid it. But you must know that you berserakup for what? And if you kepapas, you kepapas for what?

There are a lot of Iban beserakup in BN helping UMNO/Taib discriminate Dayak. There are Iban outside BN beserakup, kepapas to Iban who are helping Taib to discriminate Dayak.

Also, there are a lot of Iban beserakup outside BN helping PR against UMNO/Taib discriminating Dayak. There are a lot of Iban in BN beserakup including KOW and Jugam, kepapas to Iban who are against UMNO/Taib discriminate the Dayak.

    Unggal retired Cop,

Akai dai nyau ka nyadi pengawai pendakwa aku tu dibai nuan ngal…hehehe….

Anyway ngal, some of the brief summaries has been highlighted by our Bro. Cikgu Iban dated 2011/01/18 at 7:14 am (this morning) in the article “PKR and SNAP relationship must be maintained”

    “BESERAKUP” NEEDS “STRONG VOICES”

Somehow, I’d rather let us all “Wonder” and find clues and/or solutions together to resolve our “Beserakup”. The more voices for “Beserakup”, the more changes we can build together and the more chances our community can benefit from it.

“One Voice” can’t speak for all but “Strong Voices” do promote and produce “Strong Communities”.

“Strong Voices” for “Beserakup” can create awareness, build and help shape our Dayaks advocacy for better growth and competitive skill.

When we talk of “Beserakup”, with “Strong Voices” we can help to change the awareness in our community and help promote social responsibility awareness.

Adapting in a way that “Beserakup” is providing a voice to all diverse Dayak stakeholders’ opinions and that every Dayak who is willing and able to listen to these voices will hugely benefit from this in the short in long term.

“Beserakup” is necessary for our success, growth, sustainability and native co-existence.

“Beserakup” that possess positive “esprit-de-coupship” often wind up working together again and again.

“Beserakup” is crucial in every growth process and it required teamwork. “Beserakup” exists on every level of society and/or organization. Leaders form their own units or committees to address important issues that come up within the community and/or organization. They work together to implement growth processes on a daily basis.

Our focus on “Beserakup” is to create an awareness of the need of strong family and Dayakism relationships by empowering our partnership and/or comradeship (physical or virtual) and provide a network via this blog for voicing our thoughts and sharing knowledge as we continue to nurture and raise our families, our youth and their next generation.

I sincerely believe that developing “Strong Voices” for “Beserakup” agenda will create “Strong Communities”.

It’s Time To Talk – It’s Time To Think – It’s Time To Act!

    “STRONG VOICES = STRONG COMMUNITIES”

    “STRONG BESERAKUP PROMOTE STRONG DAYAKS”

  20. gkm2020 on January 18th, 2011 12:32 pm

    My thought of the day

HOW DO WE DECLARE OUR “BESERAKUP”?

    1. We, “Bansa Dayak”, the first peoples of Borneo, of many origins as we are, make a commitment to go on together in a spirit of “Beserakup”.

    2. We value the unique status of Dayak Natives as the original owners and custodians of lands and waters.

    3. We recognize this land and its waters were settled as colonies, assimilation and divisionized without treaty or consent.

    4. Reaffirming the human rights and indigenous rights of all Dayaks, we respect, honor and recognize continuing customary laws, beliefs, heritage and traditions.

    5. Through understanding the spiritual relationship between the land and its first peoples, we share our future and live in love, peace and righteousness.

    6. Our nation must have the courage to own the truth, to heal the wounds of its past so that we can move on together at peace with ourselves.

    7. “Beserakup” must live in the hearts and minds of all Dayaks and Non-Dayaks. Many steps have been taken; many steps remain as we learn our shared histories.

    8. As we walk the journey of healing, one part of the nation apologizes and expresses its sorrow and sincere regret for the injustices of the past, so the other part accepts the apologies and forgives.

    9. We desire a future where all Dayaks and Non-Dayaks enjoy their rights, accept their responsibilities, and have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

    10. And so, we pledge ourselves to stop injustice, corrupt practices and double standard policies to overcome disadvantage, and respect that Dayak peoples have the right to self-determination, self-governance, self-development within the life of this state and nation.

    11. Our hope is for a united Dayaks with Non-Dayaks that respects this land of ours; values the Dayak heritage; and provides justice and equity for all.

    Cheers and Change We Must!

In the name of berserakup, segulai, sejalai, sepenemu…… we must fight to a different level, approach and strategy. Come up with a memorandum of understanding and resolution.

We need to mobilise our efforts to the ground, activate our resources and explain our principles of struggle to our community. Come the educated dayaks (SDGA) initiate a seminar /symposium/colloqium,,,,

    Kaban semua,

At best I described the above article as full of contradictory. “We are not BN. We are not PR”…..yet talking about protecting our native right.

I supposed it entailed protecting native right by using parang, pedang, sumpit and sangkoh thus bringing us a step backward.
Unity is often needed to influence public opinion on political decision or gomen policies. No unity needed to “ niki buah engkeranji, ngiga paku kubok/tubu, ngetan bubu/taut, nyual kasam, ngiga bini, etc etc..

There is no where the word “Bansa Dayaks” by itself can protect Native right as portrayed in the above article. To protect Native right a political vehicle is needed/required……but being apolitical (as he often claimed) it grossly unfair for me to blame the author.

    Nya aja kaban.

  26. MERAMAT TAJAK on January 18th, 2011 4:20 pm

Perhaps a short comment on this one: Unity is the cart while the horse is Purpose. It would be putting the cart before the horse, to talk about Unity without knowing for what.

Nigerian Nobel laureate Poet, Wole Soyinka’s once asked, in an interview “Unity – but for what” ?
And my humble, off-the-cuff answer ?

    Here goes:

There are two main types of Unity that matters to the discussion.

Political Unity – would arise naturally when Dayak look at politics as a modern game to garner the most public resource for their rural.Dayak have something in common: most live in rural areas.

Cultural Unity – is the strong identification, within a cultural grouping (ethnic, religion, language). This has not worked, so far – because the key ingredient that identify who is in, and who is out, is not clear. There is no one common “symbolism” to create cultural unity. Dayak ethnics – do not even call themselves Dayak. Even within each ethnicity, there is still preponderence to identify oneself with religion and place of origin e.g James Sigat, Iban – Christian, from Ulu Katibas.

The road to Dayak Unity would involve political and cultural model.

A political model can be formed along similar model as the black caucus in the US. In that model, blacks from Democrat and Republican would exchange note, in a bipartisan spirit in the interest of the black community – and the political leadership from both side would not bar such action(except in extreme partisan legislation debate).

This model requires rational thinking and support of party leadership. This is where I see – in the long long future – the possibility of Dayak in BN and PR to collaborate since they would be addressing similar constituency.(The action by James Masing to lead a walkout against DAP who were tabling a piece of legislation on NCR land, was most regretable: that suggest bipartisanship through a political caucus would be impossible until leaders like him has been removed).

The Cultural Unity model along rallying cry like GKM2020 “Dayak Brotherhood”, would seek to define the ultimate reasons for cooperation and collaboration among Dayak, over and above a simple “fight” for budget, jobs and governmental assistance. To unite for something over and above the mundane stuff, would often mean personal sacrifice and is an altruistic action. Altruism is propel by strong belief.

I have seen many writings which suggest to invoke strong emotion, involving Dayak past glories and victimization (even when it is true), to try to implore Dayak to unite. I think this is dangerous – and more importantly, just like the PBDS days – will not last. When there is no enemy and bogeyman to “fight”, such organization will flounder, and eat themselves from within. A modern rationale, that will stand the test of time, will serve the Dayak people better.

Lets think – what that might be, this way.

If indeed the Dayak plight can be solved by Independence, by all means – make that the vision, even if that is only looking at it from ground level to the stars in heaven… just like burung puk crying/yearning for the moon!

But the catch is that if the rationale is only skin deep and only for the good of the Dayak, but not the good of humanity in the region, such vision will also flounder – and will not gain traction – with the present and future generations to come.

I believe a “force” for unity is one that sit on the high moral ground – captivating the emotion, and energizing the intellect.

    KABAN,,,

JUST TO BE ABLE TO UNITE OUR RACE TAKES US NOWHERE NEAR ACHIEVING POLITICAL CHANGE IF THE RACE IS STILL POLITICALLY FRAGMENTED. TO WIN THE BATTLE WE MUST BE ON THE SAME (ONE) SIDE, THE SIDE THAT WE BELIEVE CAN BRING US THE GREATER GOOD IN VICTORY.

    kuncitmuncit on January 18th, 2011 6:48 pm,

    KM:

I don’t disagree with your comment – the ideal is to congregate under one political party – after all, there would be no more than 2.5 million Dayak in Sarawak, and that account for less than the population of Petaling Jaya. Damn too small and politically insignificant – if not united ! But such close-knits and cohesiveness is not attainable in the foreseeable future.

So the practical solution is to acknowledge that the community will continue to be politically fragmented, but to find a practical workaround – from which to build trust over time.

I’m realistic enough to know that during election campaign,Dayak will fight tooth and nail – and would do anything to win. As such, I can imagine it would be difficult to reconcile after the election – much less to cooperate.

However, it is such practice that Dayak in PR can consider to discard even if the other guys in BN have always been doing just that: even to the extent of threatening TR who dare to vote for Opposition ! Such vengeful political culture, in the Dayak community has to end – and any candidate, exhibiting such primitive instinct – either in PR or BN, should be rejected by Dayak voters.

Of course there exist the nagging feeling that perhaps, Dayak people are hopelessly selfish and would be unable to surrender narrow self interest, and to act altruistically for the community, to be able to win the larger prize together, as a united group.

We just have to crack our collective brains for ideas.. to do simple thing first rather than imagining a single Dayak political party – which unfortunately may never materialize in our lifetime.

Talks about unity; well, go on, talk to the Dayak about unity.

To me when we talking about unity to the vast majority of the Dayak is not much different like ” someone pouring some water to the sand.” I’m saying this ever since time memorial, talk about unity has long been discussed and mentioned during Jugah’s time, Moggie’s time and now, nothing ever positive has come out, in short no unity in Dayak’s dictionary.

I’m glad, though may be a little bit late, when Ugly Face realised, the untold spirit of the Dayak,
to quote his words,”Poor Dayaks are laughing stock for other races and that’s why some Dayak people are ashame of their native identity. Some other Dayaks don’t care about other Dayaks because their hearts are blinded by a few ringgit BN money!

According to KOW, the price for each head is only RM24.00(5 can for RM10 ).

    Poor Dayak!”

to me the best solution is to promote and ask the dayaks children to study and excelled in education then only we can talk about UNITY when our people are 75% literate.

    Dear All,

Its truly excite me to have received lots of positive views and positive criticism from DB loyal readers. Thank you, I must say.

    My thought of the day

ARE WE THAT PATRIOTIC TO OUR “DAYAKISM”?

I have heard of this word some times ago hear in this blog. Are we still seeking this “Dayakism” spirit?

How are we going to achieve this “Dayakism”?

If we fail to unite via “Beserakup”, are we patriotic to “Dayakism” cause? Does “Beserakup” play a key role in “Dayakism”?

The more we talk on BN and/or PR politico avenues the more confused we are. “Why?” because both of these two political conglomerates have their own private agenda and ideology(s). But what are the vast majority Dayaks’ agenda and ideology towards achieving “Dayakism” and/or Dayak’s cause?

    As we go deeper to understand the word “Beserakup” in “Dayakism”, we begin to ask ourselves;

    • What does it mean to us?
    • What is it all about?
    • Why is it needed?
    • What benefit do we get from it?
    • What platform do we need?
    • How is it going to be done and implemented?
    • What is it Vision, Mission and Objective?
    • Who is going to initiate it?
    • Why do we need it now?

Does “Beserakup” have a place in “Dayakism” today or is it a spent force, superseded by more tangible efforts towards “getting us closer together” and/or “closing the gap” to achieve our common goals?

If we are to move forward in post-colonial issues and the current assimilation issues where many Dayaks continue to endure poor life conditions, backwardness and injustice, this question needs a careful answer.

If we keep on making perceptions and excuses, “Are we getting anywhere?”

Let me give you some hints herein:

    What is “Beserakup”?

First of all, what meaning does “Beserakup” have in the face of the very real and immediate needs of many Dayaks, and what is its relevance to the broadly accepted community responsibility for closing the gap, differences and perceptions?

“Beserakup” is an attempt to overcome Dayaks’ disadvantage(s) and improve relations between Dayaks with Non-Dayaks.

“Beserakup” is the ability to work together toward a common vision and interests; the ability to direct Dayaks accomplishment toward “Dayakism” objective(s) which may includes:

    1. E5Equity; Equality; Economics; Education; and Employment;
    2. Political Strength;
    3. Social Well Being (Healthcare, Housing, Clean Water, Roads, ICT Accessibility and other humanitarian basic needs);
    3. Native Rights, Law and Justice;
    4. Financial resources and accessibility; and
    5. Building Global Alliance and empower Regional Network & Cooperation.

Enti enda diatu, Kemaya? Enti nganti pagila, alu ila-ila.

“Beserakup” also help us rebuild Dayaks’ political order bringing coordination, peacemaking, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, enhance political power, strategic coalition and alliance with local parties and regional participation, and focus on capacity building, unity making, preventive diplomacy and undertaken to build stability and justice in and between Dayaks in the wake of marginalization, discrimination, land grabbing, systematic assimilation or other injustices entails a range of difficult ethical issues.

THOUGHTS ON HOW TO TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY
    ___________________________________________________________

Akih Hawong on January 17th, 2011 mentioned how cash strapped PKR Malaya is.

The reality is that even committed party officials have to feed the family and pay the rent etc,

All UMNO needs to do is wait for PKR financial situation to deteriorate and it will collapse as members walk away.

If so that questions the level of the commitment and unity for change of government. Unfortunately each individual must be called upon to make more sacrifices and stay united for change. It is a tough call.

Penans stayed united to fight their land rights cause for over 30 years and are still fighting. They did not have a lot of money apart from worldwide sympathy.

Sarawakians have not demonstrated sufficient solidarity with them although they carry the flag of resistance for Sarawak.
    …………………………………………………

    ON DAYAK UNITY

On Dayak unity issues it seems that the Kapit Conference was the only time when most Dayak leaders came together for a common purpose.

This is an historic event which Dayaks are recalling nowadays with nostalgia and wondering what happened to their list of demands.

UMNO PBB BN does not have to worry about a united Dayak force since Dayaks have not been able to unite since 1962! All it does is occasionally toss some disuniting issues among the Dayaks and watch them fall around in disunity.

We also live under the illusion that we have independence while we are being ruled from Kuala Lumpur.

We must realise that we don’t have an ounce of self-rule as from the village level upwards:

    1. no more village democracy as people have been deprived of their centuries old right to make decisions as a community- replaced by government appointed and paid puppet tuai rumahs.

    2. Dayak communal democratic life and spirit of working together and sharing and caring for each other have been progressively broken up by government action as its seized more land and break up more Dayak communities.

This actually represents the most serious challenge to Dayak unity AND self-sufficiency life style as communities are split asunder and scattered making it harder for people to group for action.

    3. no more local council democracy as system suspended since 1964.

    4. the “government” makes all decisions on the life and death of all Dayaks- seize their land and make them homeless and deprived of their land wealth and food sources. Land Code amended.

    5. Sarawak is still a colony while Dayaks fight each other for a share of power without seeing that the main power game is to free Sarawak from Malayan colonial domination and pillage of our oil resources.

    6. The fact is that since the Kapit Conference Sarawak was transferred as a colony in toto to Malaya by the British.

    7. Aspects of Malayan Colonisation:

    a. The Malay-nisation of Sarawak has been going on
such as the civil service and education system with Dayaks being targeted for indoctrination and Islamised – Dayaks re-classified as “Malay” (an abuse and misuse of the faith).

    b. Thousands of Dayaks are also disenfranchised because they can’t prove they are Sarawakians! On the other hand mass transmigration of non-Malay Muslims have flooded Sabah and increasingly in Sarawak. This is a threat to make Dayaks a minority in their own country

    c. Dayaks are most aware that the Sarawak Rangers have disappeared as “force” and incorporated into the Malayan armed forces to get rid of the Sarawak army as an independent force.

    d. Malayan pillage of Sarawak oil and gas resources contributing to part of $290 billion to Kuala Lumpur in the last 3 years.

How much of our wealth gone to KL in the last 48 years!? All this plus Dayak timber wealth stolen by Taib and cronies could have been used to benefit Dayaks and every one if we were an independent nation!

So Dayak brothers and sisters think outside the encirclement of the “Malaysian” mindset.

    1. Under Brooke rule we were a semi-indepenent self ruling state. Dayaks had a role in nation building then.

    2. We developed a national consciousness and everyone of us regardless of race were proud and are still proud to always call ourselves “Sarawakians”.

    3. We have the wealth and therefore means to help ourselves become an independent state.

    4. Why are we so slavish about being Malaya’s colonial subjects and let it plunder our resources and make us virtual slaves in the oil palm plantations? There is no glory in this.

    5. Let us resurrect the Rentap spirit and be real fighters again and not be selfish and be disunited over which community should get a “piece” of power.

We must act together as the Rentap force of the 1840s did in resisting colonial domination.

Rentap was respected by the colonials because he fought them every inch of his land and never surrendered.

He resisted colonial domination without comprise but his descendants are doing the reverse – they are paying homage to the foreign colonial overlord from Kuala Lumpur and fight themselves for useless positions while being robbed by Malaya at the same time!

Poor Rentap must shed a few tears when he looks on from above and see all this happening- Dayaks fighting each other while thousands of their fellowmen and families have been evicted from their land which he fought for. Many of them are now landless and also starving without proper food sources and water which they has in abundance before “Malaysia”.

Rentap would never have agreed with “joining Malaysia” as he would have forseen it as a continuation of foreign colonisation and would have led the resistance against it.

Now many years after the Kapit Conference Dayaks fears have been proven correct many times over that they have been sidelined plus having their land stolen when they could have been enriched by exploiting the land for themselves. None of the list of the Kapit ideas have been fully acknowledged by Kuala Lumpur.

A few Dayaks may have benefitted from “Malaysia” as Ministers etc., but the majority live in dire straits!

Many are forced by the circumstances to go on their berjalai- men and women. This is one of the consequences mentioned above on the breakup of communal life.

    RECONVENE KAPIT CONFERENCE

It is suggested that for the sake of Dayak unity, the Kapit Conference be reconvened on the same date as in 1962 in Kapit.

All Dayak leaders from all the rumah panjangs and villages should try to attend (problem is most are government appointees) or alternative Dayak leaders and NGO convene to review the Kapit memorandum and discuss what can be done to free Dayaks from the bondage of colonisation.

Below is an edited version of a comment posted by this writer relevant to the discussion:

“True, dreams and visions need convincing leadership. Usually this leadership comes from the leaders who have led the popular overthrow of the corrupt ruling elite and then attempt to change the system.

Community action alone while important seldom make real significant changes- only patching up the leaking dam.

Just dreams and visions without the leadership is unlikely get anywhere either- especially with the current self serving leadership in power.

A new leadership will rise again out of the present chaos we have been engulfed in for 48 years of being under the colonial domination of Malaya.

To change things in our favour, the first major task is for Sarawak to free itself from Malayan colonial rule and achieve national independence.

The next is what sort of plan for change after independence? Here are some humble off the cuff ideas for discussion.

    1. Political- “government of the people by the people for the people” -for all Sarawakians.

This is a very simple formula but working out is the hard part. How to convince everyone to work for everyone? This needs to be explored. In part we have the basic structure mentioned below plus improvement on existing structures and systems to be “pro-people”.

    2. For a start the vision of a democratic social system modelled on the Dayak communal way of life is not a bad idea with its social values of communal/co-operative ownership of land, sharing and caring has a lot of pluses.

To this we may add modern ideas of green economic planning and management to make good use of Sarawak’s still abundant resources to benefit everyone.

Readers should ponder over why the current government broke up the well tried Dayak communal way of life? The abolishment of village democracy and appointment of government paid village “Yes headmen” (ex-public servants who are more easy to control like puppets) in part enable easier seizure of the land.

The suspension of elected municipal councils has also to be restored so that our unique democracy starting from the village level up can function again.

The current system is about controlling the people. We need a system where people are in control of their lives and destiny.

    2. A new leadership must be able to offer the people a programme of change that can be achieved.

Again looking at the Dayak communal system is the concept of a self-reliant independent economy derived from the subsistence way of life. This idea has to be modernised so that each community is updated and upgraded with new ideas of self-reliance and sufficiency.

    3. Economic production- the ownership of communal land could be used to benefit both the local community and the national.

Each unit could be engaged in its own specialty such as rice production and staple foods, vegetable production, livestock, poultry and fish production. Ownership of oil palm plantations land should be returned to the original community and the oil palm companies to pay rent to the community for use of the land.

A lot of complexities created by the current system have to be sorted out.

    4. Industrial production manufacturing should be geared to self-sufficiency with export of surplus and not export driven as this means dependence on the consumer world and the ups and downs of the capitalist economy. This idea needs working on.

    5. Environment- One of the first thing to do is to rehabilitate and re-generate our forest land and environment, clean up the water systems. This will be a giant task. Many green ideas here could be developed.

The above vision may not be to everyone’s liking- as it implies that everyone to be a productive part of society. It is not your modern “advanced industrial society” but one with modern ideas.

On the other hand a co-operative society and nation which has a place for all Sarawakians regardless of their race language or faith will create a happier state where people work and care for each other unlike the dog eat dog society we have today.

Maybe readers like the idea they can add on their suggestions and make it a work in progress project?

We have a fair bit of time to go before we can even start on such ideas so why not now?
It is time we all explore the ideas of what is good for Sarawak and develop a plan for our liberation and independence from colonial rule!

Southern Sudan will be a free and independent nation soon after more than 50 years of Northern Sudan stealing its resources including oil and gas.

We should work hard for and spread the idea of a Sarawak independence and demands for a peaceful referendum.

Be inspired that our independence day is always a possibility if we have that dream, will and determination to achieve this wonderful beginning for a New Sarawak.

Napolean said “If you start to take Vienna, take Vienna”

Victor Hugo-”Those who live are those who fight”

There are many other inspiring quotes but we must first be possessed of that dream and vision for an independent Sarawak! This is our inspiration- To take back our country!”

    “AGI IDUP AGI NGELABAN”

Allow me to add a further extract from the related comments posted in HU. This discusses the question of an “independence referendum” as the one being conducted in South Sudan currently (which readers may be following).

The message is “To fight for what you want you must be ready to make sacrifices”:

A study of history shows that there are few exceptions to the cry “Independence or Death” from the day the slaves of Haiti declared their independence to East Timor independence and South Sudan independent referendum.

Rentap is credited with his war cry “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban” loosely translated as “Still Alive Still Fight”-

H G Wells summed this up nicely” “There’s nothing wrong in suffering, if you suffer for a purpose. Our revolution didn’t abolish danger or death. It simply made danger and death worthwhile”.

The past 48 years have confirmed the truth of the message of the independence fighters* that Sarawak will only be just a colony of Malaya. We all are crying “foul” as Malaya steals from Sarawak’s vast oil and gas reserves. At least $290 billion from Sabah and Sarawak in the past 3 years.

The Malayan regime will never agree to a referendum as it will certainly end up losing the oil and a vast wealthy territory.

To conclude, yes agreed that a change in government may lead to other changes hopefully. However, KL will always be ready to declare a state of emergency when that happens.”

*Note: “Independence fighters” refer to the Sarawak and Brunei patriots who rose to resist British/Malayan “Malaysia scheme” on 8th December 2011. This independence armed struggle continued to 1990. Dayaks are familiar with their perspectives of this struggle.

Some articles on remembering this historic event has been posted in various websites.

    gkm2020,

Your article on “Beserakup” (Unity) is very interesting indeed and there have been many articles written on this topic.

I have also tried to ignite the idea of Dayak Unity in my earlier response to DB blog. One thing that I would like to stress is that it will be a major challenge in trying to UNITE any organisation when it comes to politics.

History has taught us that any where in the world there always disunity in politics, as people are very passionate about their political view.

We have seen many relatives, friends and spouses are separated as a result of their different political views. This political disunity is also happening in Malaysian politics such as MCA and DAP, MIC and Hindraf and to name a few.

When it comes to Sarawak politics and in particular the Dayak political parties, there have never been a unity, but more disunity, either being disunited within the parties by self-interest individuals or from outside forces for ‘divide and rule”, and the rest is written in the history book, if there is a history book about Sarawak politics.

In short, it is much harder to unite people through politics, but not IMPOSSIBLE! At the same time we cannot avoid politics altogether, because as they say, ‘politics is part of life”.

In Australia, there are major aboriginal groups that belong to different political parties, but the grassroots of the Australian aborigines do not trust their political leaders. Even though the Australian aborigines have different political view, they are UNITED for common cause and passion and that is “LAND RIGHT” issue.

Their slogan is “LAND RIGHT NOW” and this written in their T-shirt, their own flag etc to promote and highlight their fight and struggle. Because they are united with single issue of land right and very successful with their campaigns, they have won many battles against companies and changed government.

For my personal view, if there is one thing that will unite Dayak is the land right (NCR land) issue, and we could use this slogan to unite all Dayaks, and also to use this slogan for political change. My immediate thought on the slogan includes:

    1. LAND RIGH NOW!
    2. WE WANT LAND RIGHT NOW!
    3. GIVE BACK OUR LAND! “K”,
    4. FIGHT FOR LAND RIGHT!

I hope these slogans will ignite passion of rural Dayaks whose lands are being robbed and taken away from them without any compensation, and may help to change their political alliance and vote for chance. Change We Must.

Let have these slogans written in our shirts, our houses and our lands for all to see.

This is just my thought and hope there will be more ideas and slogan to UNITE us Dayak!

  40. gkm2020 on January 19th, 2011 9:30 am

    Some thoughts of the day.

“BESERAKUP IS UNITY” – “UNITY IS BROTHERHOOD, STRENGTH, POWER & FREEDOM”

I want you to think carefully along and within each line of these sentences below:

    1. Without understanding the nature and ways of our common interest and humanity, Unity, has no soil in which to grow.
    2. Without responsibility, Unity remains an illusion and Unity becomes an empty act.
    3. Without remedy and rebalance brought by Unity, how can life ever be cleansed from the repetitive re-enactment of yesterday’s wounds?
    4. Without trial and error we could not learn, and the warmth of Unity makes way for us to try again.
    5. Unity teaches us to stand together against the wrongful act, injustice, corruption or offense, not the human life that has committed it; else we deny another their future opportunity.
    6. In Unity, we each have in us the ability to hold the best of another in trust in the sanctuary of ourselves.
    7. In the exercise of Unity is the longing for the establishment of what ought to be, and the love of this as an inner devotion is connected to the love of life continuing.
    8. Unity creates freedom, liberty, self-determination, self-governance, inter-dependence and independence.
    9. Unity is the fuel that allows common people like us to attain uncommon results and ability to empower our community strength and courage.
    10. Can we demands when we lack of Unity forum? Or can we aloud our demand example ‘better education’ without Unity forum?
    11. Unity is “All for One and One for All”.
    12. Without “Beserakup”, can we advance forward in the spirit of “Dayakism” or it’s merely rhetoric?
    13. What does “United Borneo Front” and/or “Borneo Dayak Forum” or “Barisan” or “Pakatan” or “Federation” or “DayakBaru” means to you; does Unity exist in them?
    14. What does “SDNU”, “SDGA”, “DBNA”, “FORUM”, and other Dayaks’ NGOs means to you; does Unity play any role in them?
    15. Does Unity exist in “Union” and/or “Association” or “Organization” or “Longhouse” or “Village”?
    16. Is political platform the only way to mobilize “Beserakup” or there are plenty of options?
    17. Has Unity existed in us and/or among Dayaks?
    18. Is family relationship part of Unity?
    19. Have we all succeeded in bringing Unity since the last 48 years? If not, where have it gone wrong?
    20. Does politics bring about Unity or Unity brings about politics? Can a political party setup without Unity or Unity is key to political party strength and sustainability?
    21. Can we “Win” if we all unite via “Beserakup” to vote and say “NO” to Injustice and Corruption”?
    22. Can Unity bring Injustice and Corruption down? Or you’re still pity to your old ideology and/or choose not to change your political perception and branding?
    23. Can Unity bring reformation, rEvolution and bring power to the people?
    24. Unity First, Development Priorities! Notes: “Development” comes in many form; Politics, Economics, Education, Justice and Social.
    25. Is Unity important to “Win” our Native rights?
    26. Can Dayaks unite under one strong umbrella?
    27. If others (and/or the veteran leaders) have failed to bring about “Dayak Unity”, are we (new generation) going to carry forward their failures OR learn from their failures to persistently moving forward to promote, facilitate, stimulate and undertake to uplift our “New Generation Unity”?
    28. Is politics responsible to bring our family together in peace OR it is Unity that is the enabler of love, happiness and harmony?
    29. Is Unity responsible for the success of a business and/or organization OR politics is helping business/organization to grow? Wonder, what is “Office Politics”?

Remember this; we are not our father’s fathers but we are all new fathers of our next generation fathers!

  41. Raja Gerasi on January 19th, 2011 10:23 am

    To all DBs,

Yes..yes a very deep insight in the meaning of “Unity” and reasons for “Unity” as posted by our brother gkm2020 and Sawarakbaru. Thank you very much to both of you.

I agree with brother Engkerawai that SDGA should initiate a seminar /symposium/colloqium. But it should go beyond that, make this as SDGA’s project/initiative to come a way forward and action plan….otherwise it will be just concept and idea.

Let’s make this idea and concept to become reality.

  42. Ugly Face on January 19th, 2011 10:29 am

Yes KOW. First time i agree with you. But preschool classes for Iban longhouses has been off .The promise was there but turned into filthy gas only. Still poor Dayak will vote BN for their stale promises. Guess Jabu cares, KOW? Jabu is Iban deputy CM,@ BOSS.?POOR ME!

  43. MERAMAT TAJAK on January 19th, 2011 10:37 am

I sense this is a difficult subject that has cropped up every now and then, and each time the discussion would end with a resigned, pessimistic note.

I don’t have the magic answers but like many of you, this is a pet subject of mine. So I’m also thinking out loud as I’m writing this.

To recap, and please allow me to be brutally honest about this; I think this is where the discussion is at this moment:

    - GKM2020 has more questions than answers – sorry doc !

    - B.Saing – nice try with sloganeering but no man, I think the NCR land slogan will be fleeting

    - SarawakBaru – Independence, Aum Kapit can inspire people to unite for big prize …who would dare to take the lead and face jail time

    - Kongress Iban – if its not possible to unite under Dayak, then unite as Iban … but Iban are the most quarrelsome Dayak people, the least united

    - Other popular views – the hidden hands playing Dayak against each other … but this view is fatalistic, blaming external factors – no solution

In short, there is no light at the end of the tunnel – only some hint of possibilities.

So people …. I thought to pose this little challenge:

What if we hold a Dayak Unity Conference, and let all Dayak from various walk of life to offer ideas on the case for unity (why), how to get there, establish series of milestone/benchmark to measure unity, action plan to get there ….?
Or has this been tried before … and fail ?

If we can’t bring ourselve to act on a simple initiative like this, then what’s the point of talking about this over and over again, and arrive at the same conclusion – every single time ? And to be sure, I am challenging me – just as much as I am challenging you !

On a another note: I notice whenever there is a posting about Dayak unity, inevitably the subtext is a political talk to rally voters to choose a political party over another. That’s a very narrow view – and quite disingenious (hijack the unity idea).

I think the sensible approach is to address unity but for a higher purpose, across all political spectrum. It would not be possible to be totally apolitical but I think its possible to discuss politic from an academic point of view, if necessary – and avoiding the GE/SE.

Again, the challenge – will you, you, you and I, do it ? If the answer is no, lets put this subject to rest, and let our future generations worry about it.

  44. dayaklama on January 19th, 2011 11:54 am

I don’t know what has happened. DB’s are the rebelled group and yet talking and drumming support for Dayak unity?

The more they bad mouth the leaders of BN the more split the Dayaks will be. The mass of united Dayaks are strongly marching behind the back of Dayak’s paramount chief in the case of Sarawak where as in Sabah the Kadazan Dusun are solidly backing their Hogun siao.

I don’t understand not unless DR.GKM2020 are talking about the general subject of Unity about the Dayaks like celebrating Gawai, Christmas and visit each other to closer their ties. That is the problem when a non politician talk about politics.

1 Agreed with Mr.Akih Hawong comment if there is no political unity, the just unity of gathering together during Gawai Dayaks will not improve the socio economy of the dayaks. In other words the unity must be mobilised towards the political ambition.

I would like to quote what YDK has said. The MARGINALISATION that is famously said among the opposition are nothing if compare to when they(anyone) has no say on how to run the state(Sarawak). What does this mean?

To DL this mean you will becoming more poorer and strip to nothing if you don’t have a representative in the gomen. You think you can topple the BN gomen with ever ready 37 sure win seats on hand?

    Salam 1Malaysia.

  45. gkm2020 on January 19th, 2011 11:55 am

    Unggal MERAMAT TAJAK,

Thanks for your thoughts ngal. It is truly challenging and Unity is never an easy path. It’s just like obeying God’s 10 commandments.

Not that I have some Questions more than Answers, and like yours too, this is just the beginning of our “Unity Forum” on “Beserakup Kitai Teguh, Bepecah Kitai Labuh”.

    I’m humbly learning like you and like others too, and always hunger for solutions to bring Dayaks together again like those days;

    • 1894 Peace among Dayak, the Dayaks in Kalimantan signed a peace treaty among themselves to stop the practice of head hunting or “ngayau” in Tumbang Anoy in Kalimantan.
    • 16/11/1924; Kayan, Kenyah and Dayak signed “Peacemaking” at Kapit.
    • Aum Kapit 1962.
    • And others….

    To our fellow readers,

UNITY IS HOLLOW WITHOUT PEOPLE TOGETHERNESS.

Unity is no One Man show, it require teamwork. Unity is a way forward to achieve common view and common journey. You cannot populated an Island without Unity; “No Man is an Island”.

Unity is a Movement to bring our people together and regroup them to support the Dayaks in their efforts to advance the development of our people. Unity is a valuable asset to bring back our Dignity, Courage and Honor.

Unity minimizes old habits of “Prinsip Takut Keleput” and “Prinsip Kapapas” spread like virus into us and our next generation. Unity is like blood and oxygen helping heart to work and brain to function; Man is able to work His/Her common goal with their hearts are in Unity.

In Unity, we, build determination, struggle, tireless efforts and reaffirmation of faith in promoting fundamental human rights and indigenous rights; in the dignity and worth of a native person; in the equal rights of all men and women and of Dayaks community (large and small); and to establish conditions under which justice, honor and respect for the obligations arising from our Visions and other sources of our customary law can be maintained.

Unity help us to promote social progress and better standards of Dayak well being in larger freedom, strong voices

Unity helps us to employ our tactical machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of our peoples to resolve our efforts to accomplish these aims.

Why throw more questions than answers?

When we throw more questions than answers, we create forum for people to think positively and objectively towards achieving Dayaks’ cause.

Sometimes, some things can be done individually, but in Unity, you would need a person or two or more to back you up. You cannot always have a mindset that you can get things done with your own two hands. Certain things are best done as a team. This is where Unity comes into the picture.

Some individuals do face difficulties when working with their fellow mates. Some of the possible bottlenecks that would lead to negative dynamics are:

    1. The inability to be receptive of one another’s diverse opinions and thoughts

    2. The negative working attitude that a few of us could have portrayed during the course of accomplishing our Vision and works.

    3. One’s perception that better quality of work can be produced when being carried out individually, as fellowmen or followers may still be unclear of the project expectations to be met.

If we take some time to reminisce on this, we would realize that it is actually a privilege if you were given a task and got to work on it together in Unity with a few other people.

That is because with the involvement of your Unity followers in the task, new ideas and thoughts can be generated and that would, in actual fact, boost the quality of the work produced and Mission accomplished. Most of all, it would lighten your load as the task can be delegated amongst your fellowmen.

Envisage what it is like having to handle all the aspects of the “project” and/or activity all by yourself. You would be dealing with sleepless nights, and your level of stress could very well heighten to a level above optimum.

We cannot deny the fact that Unity can at times be a huge hurdle to cross, but with the individual efforts combined, effective teamwork can still be possible and high quality work can definitely be produced.

How best can we move forward?

Let us explore some of the most helpful ways to enhance Unity productivity:

    1. We need to set a clear defined and realistic expectation that followers can agree upon.

    2. When we throw questions on the table, we do not practice personal bias. In other words, work and thoughts should be divided equally; to find the best solutions and/or answers to our cause.

    3. We must learn to be receptive of one another’s ideas and opinions, and take them as something that all of you can learn and benefit from during the course of mission.
    4. If an idea generated by one of your readers does not seem to be suitable, clarify it in a more calmly manner. It is best that you still consider his or her idea and then make the appropriate adjustments to it. NEVER look down on your peers’ capabilities as Unity players.

    5. Constantly motivate one another to carry out our Vision, Mission & Objective (VMO) effectively. An excellent Unity team is made up of members who would always support and encourage one another even when times are rough.

If you can put the above into actions, our fellow reader including myself could most probably be the people whom you would look forward to working with everyday, and your “VMO” can be executed with a positive mind…. or should we say…. positive thinking!

Together in Unity of Thoughts we can empower “Beserakup”.

  46. gkm2020 on January 19th, 2011 12:39 pm

    Unggal dayaklama,

Thanks for pointing out your opinion here.

    My candid questions to you;

    1. How can we have “Gawai Dayak” celebrated together when one of your YB lama drop “Dayak” from Gawai? Gawai without “Dayak”?

    2. Why are your Dayaklama YBs in PBB, PRS, SUPP and SPDP reluctant to unite under “MDC” umbrella like UMNO, MCA and/or MIC? Are you really promoting “political unity” or “politics of di-bolotmen” or “political division”?

    3. What happen if the majority Opposition took over the DUN/Parliament, does BN has more says? Or can the Rakyat run a government when it’s also belong to the Rakyat?

    4. Winning or Lost in an election is not an issue; who is eligible to run the next government but without Unity can there be a government? Can government work in peace without Unity?

    5. What do you see if all the Dayaks and/or the Rakyat (excluding you and your Dayaklama leaders) come together in Unity to Vote out “Politics of Injustice and Corruption”?

    6. Are you afraid of “UNITY” or is “UNITY” a burdened to you?

Romans 15:5,6, NIV; “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

Psalm 133:1, NIV; “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”

Genesis 11:6; “Behold they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them”.

    To fellow DBs,

Whatever disunites Man from God, also disunites Man from Man. Whatever disunites Dayak from truth and justice, also disunites themselves from God’s 10 commandment.

In search of Truth, Equality and Justice, there is no way we can go forward except Unity and no way anybody can Win except by serving the people’s urgent needs.

We cannot stand still or slip backwards. We must go forward now together in Unity & Brotherhood to challenge and fight “Corruption & Injustice”!

BEGULAI KITAI MENANG, CARUT KITAI KALAH!

To answer your question ” DR.GKM2020.

1.It was a practiced now only Iban are still celebrating gawai whereas the rest of the Dayaks had skip it. Isn’t it’s appropriate to drop the term Dayaks and instead should be rename Gawai Iban.Let non Iban just a guest then.

2.MDC if it get registered will be an opposition party. It is a good start for a non establish idiot to get yourself notice. They are mostly BN reject and starter in politics that dwelling in the opposition camp.
When you already cling to the power and position and on the right track why let it go and start over again?

3.Base on the proportion of seats of the happy and unhappy peoples there seem to be more happy peoples than the unhappy ones. The vast majority are still contented with the BN gomen. There’s never a glim opposition will take over the gomen.

4.The vast united Dayaks are with the gomen. When so many happy peoples around you, you would eventually cheerful as well. Try to consume more beer to forgone the misery.

5.There is no such things a politics of corruption and injustice. As JJM said if there is, there are laws in this country prevent that nature from happening. Every 5 years the electorates as law maker will judge whether it is true or not. So far non.

    6. No not at all. Democracy believe in unity to form majority. As we have said those happy peoples seem to be bigger and more united than the unhappy peoples.

    Kaban Semua,

Biblical account of human race suggests that there has never been “unity” in the real sense of the words. Remember, the account of first two human races created (Adam & Eve) who were tasked to take care of trees in the Garden of Eden with specific instruction of the Creator? Because of the disunity between two persons, one of them (Eve) become rebellious and refused to listen as commanded….she took the forbidden fruit and eat it.

The gist of the matter if two persons cannot be united what more one expect if it involved thousands or millions of people. I rest my case.

    Nya aja kaban.

    DB,

DBF, UBF and SNAP symposium in Sibu are some of the forum toward Dayak Unity. Tho I am not there but my man is always there.

We must remind our self. Actually we are always united but may not come to our expectation.

Dayak unity cannot be answered by one forum. We need time to organize our discussion again and again. We need years to put Dayak Unity into action. Do not give up.

Nadai jako tu: Again, the challenge – will you, you, you and I, do it ? If the answer is no, lets put this subject to rest, and let our future generations worry about it.

Well said Akih Hawong. There are pros and con. The advantage of being loyal is that you will not see any misery and political struggle if not by the act of Eve. Meaning God will keep all human dwell in the garden of Eden but how many? Will they multiple if not by the result of disobedient? The fruit giving them knowledge and senses.
The disadvantage is what being reflect by DB’s here of no ending political struggle and we have to work hard to get food and not free as it was living in the garden. The good thing is as we have multiplied peoples that can work the world economy and things are getting better with the help of technology resulting from the knowledge by eating the forbidden fruit.

“It was a practiced now only Iban are still celebrating gawai whereas the rest of the Dayaks had skip it”.
    ———————————————-
    Your comment above refers.
Please Dayaklama, do not give wrong information. I do not know what you get by telling such blant lies.
Come to any Land dayaks(Bidayuh) kampungs during any Gawai dayak on June 1, you will see the celeration is still very much alive.
Just lately MT also caught Akih Hawong of telling another big lies about Paul Kandang.

Why do you guys – BN supporters loves to tell lies? Is this your way of earning your living or you just enjoy it???? I feel very ashame of our fellow dayaks behave in such manner.

  59. Akih Hawong on January 19th, 2011 4:52 pm

KOW , as you can see I am slowing down and less aggressive in neutralizing opposition DB and promoting BN.

REASON: As I said earlier the coming state polls is a foregone conclusion. Landslide victory for BN is almost assured. Two-third majority is already in the bag.

To be honest I am now more focusing on post -Taib era. How the Dayaks can fit in when YDK retired/stepped down? It opportune time for Dayaks to regroup within the establishment once Taib left office or kick the bucket or go honey mooning.

    Nya aja kaban.

  60. Ugly Face on January 19th, 2011 4:53 pm

    Quote from dayaklama:
…I would like to quote what YDK has said. The MARGINALISATION that is famously said among the opposition are nothing if compare to when they(anyone) has no say on how to run the state(Sarawak). What does this mean?
    ……………………………………..

You DO ADMIT THAT DAYAK IS MARGINALISED UNDER BN GOVERNMENT. But PR will do worse if it comes to power?

You are saying that Dayak have to continue being marginalised because BN shall remain in power till kingdom come.Because there is nothing BN can do anymore for Dayak. You are saying Dayak will be worse if OPPOSITION become the government. I cannot be wrong here. This is the best comprehension anyone can get from your quote above.

BUT HAS PR BECOME THE GOVERNMENT IN SARAWAK?
It is acually people like you who want to keep your status quo. Like the preschool classes that was cancelled for Iban longhouses earlier this year. Yes, Iban longhouses shall remain without preschool and Ibans must bear this with the BN government because if PR comes into power, not only will the preschool classes be cancelled but even the longhouses will be bulldozed from the ground ( PR will do no better but worse than BN ?)

At least KOW admitted the literacy rate among Iban must be raised quickly but how is this?
Dayaklama will say, bear with BN! You mean bear the JUGAM? BTW where is the infamous blogger JUGAM?

    Poor Dayak!!

    MARAMAT TAJAK Jan. 18th.2011 8.43pm.

I would like to stress that “JUST to get our people united AS A RACE ” alone cant change the present political landscape. And by “ON THE SAME (ONE)SIDE”, i do mean ” to congregate in ONE political vehicle.

Thus,if our people dream of achieving political change, it is imperative that we UNITE AS A RACE and belong to the ONE AND SAME political party,…not necesarily a pure IBAN/DAYAK party.

    DB,

    JBA, gkm2020 and the rest.

We shall hold on the topic that are not energized our mood and influence the voter to vote out the expired YB.

Since the Election is on the corner we shall more focus on the subject more relevant to the voters.

Exposure of BN bad habit and their failure. Local issue and so on, I think amongst the topic that are more attractive.

  63. Unak Semambu on January 19th, 2011 7:37 pm

    Interesting discussion. Ka nyelepak mimit.

In fact in politics there is no enemy but surely we have the opponents who managed to brainwash most of our people to support them. Here we cant bring the slogan of ‘agi idup agi ngelaban’ with the word unity (berakup)- it’s a clash of human civilization. We could not mix the two together if we want to bring our agenda forward- change we must.

However, I salute the author for putting his good ideas & wide coverage on unity but the pictures attached are against the good motive to bring us beserakup. The slogan of agi idup agi ngelaban is only relevant to Arm Forces who protect our nation from communist or any insurgents – fight till death. In the era of headhunting- that slogan is to give courage or motivate the fighters to defend their own community from any attack/ ambush by the enemies or rather fighting for survival or survival of the fittest.

In politics we don’t fight our opponents to garner support but rather compete with them for supporters or followers- the voters. Any party that has many followers will win the election- this is politics. This is the toughest thing that BN opponents always tried to do and failed since the fall of SNAP. No doubt, in many occasions the opposition also won more followers (although not enough to take over govt)- and not long after the election results had been announced the followers lost their master(s)- so how the opposition can maintain their followers if the elected YB used them as stepping stone- for personal enrichment? Could that be one of the reasons why our people not united and why there is lack of unity in the opposition camp?

When we said we must unite, do we say we unite in one political party or in an organization and which one do we choose- that can successfully bring us into the mainstream of development? If we say unite under opposition coalition, does it means we call for other Dayaks to disunite with the BN so that the opposition has many followers and vice versa? Can we measure unity based on the number of the poor vs the rich ratio? Could we conclude that the poor nation lack of unity in developing their country/ state?

Do we Dayaks have unity? Depending on which side; if you are with BN, the answer is absolutely yes- because majority of our people united to support BN. But to opposition supporting BN means Dayaks are not united, is that a fair judgment just because you are in the opposite camp- short of followers mean NO unity on your side?

The question is if there is Dayak unity in BN why are they still being neglected by their YBs particularly Taib gomen? Did they wrongly choose the political party for unity or the party is not suitable for them in spite of strong unity? Or did they only unite to vote for BN candidates because they fell into the traps? Would they ever regret, I guess no, because every election they do the same? But why our people chose to remain poor even they stay united for the last 47 yrs under BN leadership?

I think BN opponent’s task is not to hold conferences on unity but do ground campaign (research) how to convince/ persuade our people to change their unity (support) from BN to PR if changing the state gomen can change our people’s fate or standard of living for good.

  64. MERAMAT TAJAK on January 19th, 2011 7:44 pm

I’m not sure our conversations are getting any closer towards resolution but I just feel duty bound to respond to some comments, anyway.

    GKM2020,

OK – I understand your purpose is to outline the case (reasons) and the process, by which productive engagement about Dayak Unity can be progressed forward. Only that, if I may say so – its not clear if the questions are rhetorical to stimulate thinking or an engagement structure. I guess I will just have to re-read :)

    Bro Raja Gerasi,

If there is enough interest, from among DB bloggers,I will be happy to put the panggul on the ground and get moving to organize it.

    Iban Abroad,

Agree my last sentence may be a bit too brash, and may have come out, not the way it was intended. It was an exasperated challenge; and not meant to discourage at all.

    KM,

I agree with everything you said, except that in the process getting there i.e to unite under ONE and SAME political party (whatever that maybe),we have to be flexible, and accept the condition as is – and take it from there.

GKM2020 hinting at the rules. CharcoalArt also mention it, in his own way. Basically, I think the idea is to implant a modern political culture among Dayak to allow a process of productive consultation and engagement to flourish. Not easy with many old politician mindset, but the new generations may be more receptive, and won’t be blinded by emotional enmities i.e knowing when to be neutral and ‘Atas Pagar’ for the community good, and when to do politicking for the sake of democratic ideals.

    Unggal dayaklama,

Thanks for sharing your BN ideology in this blog.

Like I’ve always said earlier, I’m no BN or PR but just an ordinary citizen and a native principal voter who is intelligence enough to know what is “wicked” and what is “justice”. The power is in my hand.

However, since I believe in democratic process I shall let all DB readers in this forum to analyze your points and let them choose their own faith in the coming election.

    Unggal Akih Hawong,

Quote: “Mengga Mikui confided that thus far he has spent 100K going around the Tamin constituency doing his pre-election campaign”.

I received a call from Mr. Mengga Mikui this afternoon, you know what he told me; “please don’t bullshit and making habit fabricating stories of lies” (on his personal political campaign expenses).

    To DB readers,

    WHAT IS CHANGE?

For those who seek “C.H.A.N.G.E.”, I wish to simplify these letters and sharing it with you herein today.

To me, the word “Change” has many meaningful phrases. But for our DB’s cause, it could mean “Communities Helping All Natives Gain Empowerment” (empowerment in E5: Equity, Equality, Economics, Education & Employment).

Notes: We, DBs, are part of the Dayak communities.

CHANGE it’s not just a campaign for election – it’s call for voting and winning “Native Rights”. We do not need capitalist governance that deny our native rights and systematically swindle our native lands.

We want to build a new wave of positive changes for our peoples. A Change that reject injustice, corruption, political lies, hopelessness, helplessness, fear, dependable politics and self-interest as a starting point for policy.

We need a hopeful and optimistic Change based on unity common interests and bonds between our peoples, and on the values of fairness and equality that most Dayaks and the Malaysian people share.

I believe that the slogan “Beserakup Kitai Teguh, Bepecah Kitai Labuh” is the primary to make “Unity for Change” successful. But DBs have to Change.

We need a fundamental Change on how to put our values back at the heart of our Unity politics. And we need a fundamental Change about the future of DBs are valued, for their views as well as their effort.

CHANGE is committed to building a stronger community by developing relationships across racial, ethnic, economic, political, social, and religious lines.

CHANGE is not a movement, a protest group, a political action committee, or a service organization. We do not run programs, endorse candidates, or take government money.

But what we do is to create awareness, acting as whistleblower and cultivate the skills of our leaders by identifying shared concerns and needs so that we may act together for the common good.

However Change cannot move forward with full blast without Unity. To mobilize Change, we need to build solidarity and unity. Solidarity is our journey while Unity is our future.

I’m also agreeable to “Unity Conference” idea as I believe it could contribute to building Dayaks’ Solidarity and unity that together we can and will, build a better world for all.

    Lastly

What can we do to ensure a successful “Native Unity Vote Campaign”?

    Thank you.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A NEW SARAWAK

Meramat Tajak said- “SarawakBaru – Independence, Aum Kapit can inspire people to unite for big prize …who would dare to take the lead and face jail time”

Hahaha! this can be answered by H.G. Wells:

“There’s nothing wrong in suffering, if you suffer for a purpose. Our revolution didn’t abolish danger or death. It simply made danger and death worthwhile”.

We are not all death defying people but when we are motivated by a cause we should do our utmost to achieve that goal (not gaol!). Always remembering Rentap’s war cry!

Aren’t Dayaks known for their fearless fighting spirit?

Well, some people like Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail for an ideal (freedom from apartheid and independence for S Africa).

Chia Thye Poh (born 1941- ) of S’pore was locked up by friend LKY for 32 years (world record for political prisoner!) for refusing to sign a piece of paper admitting his alleged communist links. He is free now and still admitting nothing! And LKY still frustrated by him! We should remember Chia because he joined in the opposition to the Malaysia neo-colonial scheme and in a way supported our cause for real independence. He is permanently banned from entering Malaysia.

    AUM KAPIT

I think the Aum Kapit is actually already in session here on this page with the furious debate going on.

Seriously Dayak brothers and sisters UMNO is never more happy when we fight among ourselves! Then we will not unite to fight them!

However, to vigorously debate and disagree is part of the process of achieving agreement!

This is not fighting or brawling like they do in the Japan, S. Korean, Taiwan or Italian Parliaments & others! Just keep the parangs sheathed.

You should debate strongly amongst yourselves so you all can clarify in your minds on the issues. When you do there will be no stopping a few hundred thousands determined and united Dayaks!

It is suggested that Dayaks revisit Kapit literally and review the Kapit Resolutions at this historic location.

Convene another history meeting Aum Kapit2.

The programme has been work in progress in this page with the likes of GKM2020 drawing up the agenda! There is plenty to talk about provided you don’t have anything to drink first. Then there will be chaos!

    We can’t agree on that?

And may I humbly submit my 2 cents worth on a topic for open discussion.

    1. That is the question of independence for Sarawak and call for a referendum on this issue. My views and stand are expressed here and elsewhere.

Basically it defies logic why we would want to continue as a colony of Malaya when we have the resources space and people to exercise self-rule independent of any foreign domination.

That Dayaks can intelligently debate the peripheral issues on which tribe or leader gets which ministerial post or a share of the wealth is something that could be done after we get our independence. The share will be BIGGER then if that is what is desired.

    2. The new Sarawak we wish to construct. I have outlined the Dayak cummunal ideal (modernised) and I feel this is a good start. Dayaks practiced their centuries old democracy and now lost this right by government decree. With this also lost land and community of sharing and caring for each other.

This video link shows how a modern Dayak community life style has actually been put in practice. You need to watch it with an open mind and make connection to the traditional Dayak way of life. It is not that different.

The video is in English so most will understand.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yru1C-RE7lc&feature=player_embedded

With my best wishes for better understanding of each other.

what unak semambu said above, has long been haunted me. i used to describe the situation above as “tambab”. and that why i m very particular to promote to the dayak children to excell in education at the early stage. other wise no piont in talking about politic, injustice and corruptions to the elders or thier parents. the time ain’t right and not yet come. but it worth to let the ball rolling on the floor.

if you continously talking to the elders about politic, please be ready to accept what unak semambu said, just to quote,”..The question is if there is Dayak unity in BN why are they still being neglected by their YBs particularly Taib gomen? Did they wrongly choose the political party for unity or the party is not suitable for them in spite of strong unity? Or did they only unite to vote for BN candidates because they fell into the traps? Would they ever regret, I guess no, because every election they do the same? nothing else, can best and suitable to describe the real situation above beside “tambab”. if ones can tell me, that the situation or scenario is not “tambab”, please tell me, i m a good lister.

poor me, being a dayak entangle in the web of “belix”. in short and raw “the brain in used is not to the optimum capacity”

  72. Unak Semambu on January 20th, 2011 12:29 am

Is there any yardstick to measure unity? In the Union we can measure unity by vote consensus either in signing CA or raise grievances against the organization/ company. In Union the members also never be 100% united- sometime with team A & B. but at the end of the day life has to go on and whatever decision made should be a win-win situation.

Ok back to the unity of our people- what are we going to do with unity if we ever find the solutions to it? How to make unity works to the betterment of our people? I think unity is meaningless without everybody’s commitment, sacrifice & the ability to help or give assistance. Then how many of us have the ability to help and also willing to give assistance in monetary & non-monetary to the poor- in all fields of development?

The unity may not work to its best if more members were to seek helps than giving helps but it got to be done until we can reverse the situation.

Another question if PR is to govern the state and gives title to NCR lands, how do we prevent the land from being mortgaged at low value or for something that is not beneficial to the owner- e.g sell the land to purchase vehicle but after 5 yrs there is no value to the car- land gone and the car becomes scrap metal!

Let’s take Australia as an example; the people are also divided in political ideologies- 49% support Liberal, another 49% Labor, the rest support 3 independent candidates. But they are united to make the country a nice place to earn a living and economically strong compared to some other developed nations. Why…? because majority of the people are capable and willing to help, committed and sometimes made sacrifices for the nation.

Most important thing corruption is at the control level- nobody is above the law…whoever commits wrong doing will be charged in court. And there were few cases the state assembly men step down voluntarily when found guilty or made unpopular decisions. In Malaysia, do we ever heard of elected YB step down voluntarily…or because nobody is ever being charged for corruption…so good to be true? Only the small fries made up the number in the list of corruption charges?

I think, in Sarawak, no matter how united the people are but if the government still practiced nepotism and corruption all efforts to unite our people can go to drain. Therefore we must get rid of the root causes of corruption- Papa2 dan anak2 perasuah! Can we do it thru the secret ballot boxes in this coming state election?

    Hello hello…HI what’s up man?

I am quite certain everybody will agree that thus far the debate and discussion pertaining to Dayaks issue in this website for the past two years has not yield the desired result. In all, the observation by Sarawakbaru and the immediate respond from MT says it all.

The message from Sarawakbaru if I may quote is “To fight for what you want you must be ready to make sacrifices”. The immediate respond from MT I believed is a reflective or the overview of Dayakbaru’s, very disappointing indeed.
“Meramat Tajak said- “SarawakBaru – Independence, Aum Kapit can inspire people to unite for big prize …who would dare to take the lead and face jail time”.

Its like saying what the heck I sacrificed my personal comfort? I am in the comfort zone why must I spend my precious time in jail? For what, I want to suffer just because of others? It’s because of this cowardice act and selfish attitude that hamper Dayak progress. MT appear to be sending a wrong signal here……his ethnocentric view point that it’s wrong or not worthwhile spending time behind bar and suffer even for a purpose. Then might as well forget about the Dayaks cause & struggle period.

Hello kaban! You all hear it first here:

Don’t be surprised if Ming Court Affair/Kumpulan Maju 1987 was uncle yakub vs nephew taib, so this time 2011 election it is dad taib vs son sulaiman.

As sulaiman proven failed as a banker and politician despite all his dad support, akik taib decided that he lost hope to hell with his son.

With akik taib new marriage it made sulaiman even angrier than ever when own dad renege his promise keep faithful to his mom laila.

Now it is civil war soon BN vs BN.

Sadly it shall be PBB sleeper cells traitor group(like parti arabs and umno sarawak etc) supporters that plan to use and influence sulaiman as their revolt leader against his own dad!

Remember, in any ancient or recent empire/kingdom, most of the traitors were the top generals themselves either murdered the emperor or entire family members.

Except for Sarawak kingdom it is the failed spoilt son shall be influenced, used by the PBB insider splinter traitor group. It is civil war soon BN vs BN, again.

And remember too what William Mawan said “the biggest BN enemy are the inside traitors, not the opposition like PKR”.

And look closely too how PRS suddenly very vocal against akik taib timber cronies at Rejang logjam and how akik jemot Masing said the current state land code contradict common law. PRS already join the Umno Sarawak group???

Anyway interesting to see who are on akik taib group or with sulaiman revolt group. BN vs BN.

But to all of you sleepy Dayaks, the hell with them all BN.

Remember to use this new universal Dayak slogan:
    “ANANG TAKUT NGELABAN BN!”

For starter cold dish, akik hawong too will revolt against akik taib old friend in betong, akik jabu the raja kepayang.

Akik hawong will play-acting (but endorsed by PRS) to fight as calon bebas in DUN Layar versus akik jabu…as a gift and show to Umno he too can defeat akik taib group. Akik hawong now busy soliciting extra funds for his campaign so beware OK my kabans!

Repeat: Akik hawong now busy soliciting extra funds for his campaign so beware OK my kabans!

Next we shall see who SNAP will allign to as well hehehe…with Pakatan or too sweet to resist the new sulaiman revolt group or fold back (again!) with akik taib.

Again you shall see Dayak politicians once again become donkeys and monkeys and frogs being split divided over these two BN vs BN group ahahaha!

Last but not least, again to remind all of you sleepy Dayaks, the hell with them all BN.

Remember to use this new universal Dayak slogan:
    “ANANG TAKUT NGELABAN BN!”

Thanks in advance for take note aok kaban!

    AKIH AND ALL,

It was a total suprise when I first caught a glance at the front page of today,s Borneo Post. Before reading the footnote of the picture I had wished and thought that DP Jabu was handling a box full of NCR LAND TITLES for the people of Ulu Niah including those of Rumah Ranggong,Rh Banta and Rh Ngelayang.

Of all the people why must it had been DPJ to handle these boxes of relief supplies. Why didn’t the authority use the Armed Forces personel ?DPJ is far too BIG a personality to manhandle items of very little significance.

Land titles and compensation monies in hard cash are what the Dayak people in Ulu Niah really want.I hope DPJ does realise that!!!!

  78. CharcoalArt on January 20th, 2011 11:28 am

I am reading the article and the comments here. I have no doubt that most of us share the dream that Dayak can unite one day.

Dayak unity has always been the ultimate desire yet remains as illusion until today. This is something that isn’t easy to achieve especially when there are people who wish to divide us continously. People with the conqueror or colonist mentality would look at Sarawak as a whole and spend days and nights strategising on how to control, exploit and continously govern it. Quite a contrasting to our lesser aim or dream where we only wish to unite.

There are weaknesses within the Dayak community such as binking, papas, bam, manggah, lawa, etc. But we are just normal human beings just like the others. The same problems exist in other communities such as the Chinese, Malays or Indians. However that have not stopped them from progressing way ahead of Dayaks. We thereofore should not waste too much time regreting our weaknesses as as they are part of our non perfect human traits & pretty much beyond our control. What we could do however is to improve ourselves as much as possible such that others will do likewise. Also, let’s drop the idea that we are better than others and learn to be more humble in the process.

As I had mentioned before, the disunity among Dayaks has been chiefly caused by Parti Pesaka. It is not so correct for me to say this as it is like poking many of my friends and relatives who are in the party. However, I take it as an honest observation, if nothing else, that the coalition of Pesaka and Bumiputra backed up by Federal Gov’t is the cause of it all.

As far as I know, if PBB is willing to accept all Dayaks right now, I can assure you PRS, PBB, SNAP, Partyless, Atas Pagar will apply to join the party right now. A case in point, the 5 partyless YBs ex PBDS were so desparate in wanting to join PBB back in 2004. But such effort failed. What does this tell us?

PBB want some Dayaks but not too many of them. As simple as that. Therefore the Dayaks in PBB right from the time of Pesaka’s founder the late Tun Jugah to the current Pesaka members & politicians are responsible for alienating themselves from other Dayaks. What choice other Dayaks have if not forming own party or joining a chinese party like SUPP?

The splitting up is done, the rest is governing the state. Control the resources and quash the rebels. Divide any opposition as far as possible. Oh yes, we all know these tricks, everyone get so bored unti so many Dayaks are dying to see the end of this rule.

The question is, what does it take end the misery? Does it require you to spend time in jail, sacrifice your personal comfort or destroy your fellow Dayak politicians? Undoubtedly everybody has their own answers to that and we can discuss it for the next 10 years, which we should – refer to the purpose of the forum.

By starting a symposium on unity would help, I do agree. It would be one of the effort. However, we have bigger problem, mainly political ones. Many have tried to ignore political divides through NGOs, etc. but it has come back to square one. If the leader of the NGO is a non politician then some politicians will control him – the end result is still the same.

Therefore I do believe Dayak unity has to be achieved through politics. Party merger would be a good start. Even better if there is a party like SNAP that could win all the Dayak seats in the next election. That would be a good start.

Tunisia calms as government rejects old guard
By HADEEL AL-SHALCHI, Associated Press Hadeel Al-shalchi, Associated Press – Wed Jan 19 2011

TUNIS, Tunisia – Tunisia’s new government said Wednesday it has freed all the country’s political prisoners and also moved to track down assets stashed overseas by its deposed president and his widely disliked family.

Tensions on the streets appeared to be calming as the administration tried to show it was distancing itself from the old guard.

Hundreds of protesters led a rally in central Tunis demanding that former allies of deposed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali stop clinging to power. Later, about 30 youths in the capital broke a curfew and set up camp near the heavily guarded Interior Ministry, bringing mats, food and water for an overnight sit-in. Police didn’t bother them.

In recent days, police had fired tear gas and clubbed protesters.

The U.N. said more than 100 people have died in the unrest that surrounded Ben Ali’s ouster.

He fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday after 23 years in power, and a caretaker government is now struggling to calm this moderate Muslim nation on the Mediterranean Sea, popular among European tourists and seen as an ally in the West’s fight against terrorism.

Some 33 members of Ben Ali’s family have so far been taken into custody while trying to leave the country, as was the Senate president, national TV said.

Ben Ali’s longtime prime minister, Mohamed Ghannouchi, kept his post and is trying to convince Tunisians a new era has arrived — even if the composition of the interim government has many faces from the old guard.

Interim President Fouad Mebazaa went on television and promised to live up to the people’s revolt, which he called a “revolution.”

“Regarding security, you have certainly noticed that it has improved,” he said. “We have discovered the leaders of the chaos, and have stopped the gangs and those who put fear in the hearts of people. The situation is moving toward stability.”

Some were doubtful of promises of change.

Hafed al Maki, 50, who works at the country’s largest insurance company, said he would not wait for the 60-day constitutional limit for new presidential elections to pass “because that is enough time for the old cronies to set their roots in and start their old ways again, thieving and taking our resources. No way that’s happening again.”

Opposition figures and the prime minister’s office have said that the 60-day limit is unrealistically short, and the delay will more likely be six to seven months.

Swiss officials estimate Tunisian government officials have put about $620 million into Swiss banks, and the anti-corruption group Transparency International France and two other associations filed suit in Paris alleging corruption by Ben Ali and his wife.

A French government minister said the Tunisian central bank director, Taoufik Baccar, has resigned following widespread rumors that the deposed president’s wife fled the country with a stash of gold. The central bank has denied an unsourced report in the French newspaper Le Monde that said Leila Trabelsi was believed to have taken 1.5 tons of gold out of the country, possibly bringing it to Switzerland.

But “rumors about that exist, and for that the president of the Central Bank of Tunisia has resigned,” Nejib Chebbi, a longtime opponent who took a post in the unity government, told BBC World News.

Chebbi said an investigation would take place.

Tunisia’s official TAP news agency also reported that the Central Bank had taken control of Banque Zitouna, a bank founded by a son-in-law of Ben Ali, to protect the deposits of accountholders and prevent a run on the bank.

The national prosecutor’s office moved to investigate overseas bank accounts, real estate and other assets held by Ben Ali, his wife Leila Trabelsi and other relatives. His relations — especially his wife’s family — were seen as corrupt and dominated many businesses in the nation.

The Swiss president said that her country’s federal council agreed to freeze any assets in Switzerland belonging to Ben Ali, to help work up a possible criminal case over alleged stolen funds.

In Geneva, the United Nations’ human rights chief, Navi Pillay, said she was sending an “assessment team” to Tunisia in coming days, and estimated more than 100 deaths have occurred so far during the unrest in Tunisia.

Tunis’ stock exchange, many shops, schools and universities remained closed and some workers have gone on strike. A curfew remains in place, thought the government shortened it as security improved.

Mustapha Ben Jafar, one of several new ministers who dropped out of the unity government Tuesday out of concern about the old guard’s strong presence, met Wednesday with the prime minister to discuss conditions for a possible return.

He told The AP that the prime minister assured him all political prisoners have now been released, along with Islamists convicted under the country’s draconian 2003 anti-terror laws — which were widely criticized by rights groups for being too sweeping and imprecise. It was unclear exactly how many such prisoners were freed.

In another effort to ease tensions, the government released 1,800 nonpolitical prisoners who had less than six months to serve, the official news agency reported.

Senate President Abdallah Kallel, a strong Ben Ali ally and a one-time powerful interior and defense minister, was taken into custody along with his wife as they tried to fly to Paris Wednesday, Tunisian national TV said. Security officials said without elaborating that the couple was barred from departing pending investigations.

Tunisia’s unrest has rattled the economy, which had seen impressive growth in recent years. Moody’s Investor Service downgraded Tunisia’s government bond ratings Wednesday, citing “significant uncertainties” surrounding Tunisia’s economic and political future.

Moody’s cut the rating by one notch, to “Baa3″ from “Baa2,” and also downgraded its outlook to negative from stable. The new rating is one notch above “junk bond” status.

The hasty departure of 30 or more Ben Ali and Trabelsis family members has brought the Tunisian economy to its knees
By Damien McElroy, Tunis 7:18PM GMT 19 Jan 2011

Members of ‘The Family’ exerted total dominance of the Tunisian economy, owning banks, commercial enterprises, factories, tourist resorts and vast land holdings.

By conservative estimates Mr Ben Ali’s immediate family had a £5 billion fortune, while brothers and sisters of his hated wife Leila Trabelsis accumulated even greater wealth.

The official TAP news agency said a judge had accepted a petition by prosecutors to investigate bank accounts, real estate and other assets.

The hasty departure of 30 or more Ben Ali and Trabelsis family members has brought the Tunisian economy to its knees – 43 banks, 66 shops and 11 industrial plants have been destroyed since Mr Ben Ali fled.

Demonstrators mobbing central Tunis have demanded swift action to seize Ben Ali assets inside the country and cash stashed abroad. Few believe the interim government led by Mr Ben Ali’s former acolytes has the stomach for the task.

The United Nations on Wednesday put the number of those killed in the Tunisian uprising at 100.

Michele Calmy-Rey, the Swiss foreign minister, said the assets of known Ben Ali associates would be frozen for three years to prevent the misuse of Tunisian public funds.

“We know that members of Ben Ali’s entourage, which held an important position in the country’s economic and financial industry, travelled to Switzerland several times over the last months,” Mrs Calmy-Rey said. “According to our experience, trips like these could be used for financial transactions.” Leila, a former hairdresser and alleged low-level informant for Tunisia’s secret police, married Mr Ben Ali in 1992. A French expose dubbed her the Queen of Carthage for her imperious and greedy behaviour.

Since the 74-year old president sought refuge in Saudi Arabia on Friday Tunisians have looted the luxury properties of figures close to him, including the president’s four sons-in-law – all of whom have accumulated vast fortunes – and Mrs Ben Ali’s brother Belhassan.

One man even ripped up the sprinkler system at the villa of Sakher El-Materi, husband of Mr Ben Ali’s daughter Nasserine. He said: “This is a symbol of everything that was stolen from us. I will give it to my son as a souvenir.”

Police announced they had arrested 33 members of Mr Ben Ali’s family on Wednesday night on suspicion of “crimes against Tunisia”. Television footage showed images of seized gold and jewellery.

Tunisia’s interim president Foued Mebazaa on Wednesday promised a “total break” with the past and hailed the “martyrs of dignity and liberty”.

Tunisia’s central bank took over a bank controlled by Mr Materi in the first such move against the huge assets controlled by the Ben Ali family.

“The activities of Zitouna Bank have been placed under the supervision and control of the Tunisian Central Bank,” the bank said in a statement.

Materi, a senator, holds a 51-per cent stake in the Islamic bank, which was set up in May, and many other assets. US embassy cables published by WikiLeaks exhaustively detailed the business interests of Mr Ben Ali’s relatives.

The diplomats recorded how Mr Materi boasted of his influence in reportedly helping the Duke of York gain access to Tunisian officials. A cable said: “He noted that he had helped the UK Ambassador secure several appointments (including a lunch with the Prime Minister) for UK Prince Andrew during his recent visit. Before his intervention, El Materi said, the Prince had only one appointment with a single Minister.”

Mr Materi, who is believed to be in the Gulf, owned a pet tiger and his extravagance reminded the US diplomats of Uday Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein who was reviled by Iraqis.

Tunisians who were forced to sell businesses to influential relatives are now preparing to recover lost assets.

Moncef Cheikhrouhou, who was forced to sell his shares in a family press group to a relative of the president and go into exile in 2000, said he hoped a commission created by the Justice Ministry would reverse acquisitions resulting from nepotism and corruption.

He said: “They behaved like a mafia that reaped money from all sectors of the Tunisian economy.”

The French government is under pressure to seize the extensive property interests held by the Tunisian first family including apartments in Paris, rural chateaux and villas on the Riveria.

Tunisia announced it had freed all its remaining political prisoners, including members of a banned Islamist movement.

    Swiss freeze Tunisian accounts
    Jan 19, 2011 – 15:58

Five days after he fled his country, Switzerland has frozen accounts and assets connected to deposed Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, with immediate effect.

The seven-member cabinet also agreed to freeze any assets belonging to Laurent Gbagbo of Ivory Coast, who is clinging to power despite having lost a presidential election to Alassane Ouattara in November.

“The government decided at its meeting today [Wednesday] to freeze any funds in Switzerland of the ex-Tunisian president and his entourage with immediate effect,” Swiss President and Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said at a news conference in Bern.

Calmy-Rey said the freezing of assets would apply for a three-year period to allow time for the countries concerned to initiate criminal proceedings against the former regimes, which is a precondition to applying to Switzerland for judicial aid and ultimately the return of stolen funds.

The foreign minister said Switzerland would encourage Tunisia and Ivory Coast to take these steps.

    40 names

Up to 40 names and organisations are included in the Swiss list for Tunisia. “Switzerland wants to avoid our financial system being used to embezzle funds from poor countries,” Calmy-Rey said.

Calmy-Rey noted that it was “very unlikely” that Ben Ali’s entourage had already removed assets from Switzerland as the banks were closely watching any Tunisian activity in recent days as required by their due diligence procedures.

She said there were indications that such attempts had been made to withdraw funds but declined to give further details.

The official Tunisian news agency TAP reported on Wednesday that a Tunisian prosecutor had opened an investigation into the overseas assets of the deposed president and his family.
TAP said the prosecutor’s office had decided to investigate bank accounts, real estate and other assets held by Ben Ali, his wife Leila Trabelsi and other relatives.

    New law

A new Swiss law on returning illicit dictator funds, backed by the House of Representatives and the Senate, is due to enter into force on February 1, 2011.

Under the law, the cabinet can block contentious assets and will have up to ten years to launch action to confiscate the assets once they have been blocked. The confiscation of assets must be declared by the Federal Administrative Court.

Once returned, the funds must be used to improve quality of life for the wider population, strengthening the judicial system and the fight against crime.

In advance of the dictators’ assets law entering into force, the government relied on emergency powers granted by the Swiss Constitution to provisionally block possible Tunisian and Ivory Coast accounts.

The Swiss attorney general received two requests to freeze assets deposited in Switzerland by Ben Ali and his clan.

A spokeswoman said the motions were being examined. One was filed by Swiss lawyer Ridha Ajmi, who is calling for a criminal investigation and filed a motion that urgent measures be taken.

My thought for the day: Hollow slogan of “Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban” should be done away with.

“AGI IDUP AGI NGELABAN – UDAH MATI TAMA KERUNGAN”

Let it be known the slogan “Agi idup agi ngelaban” is long gone among Dayak BN. The battle cry is found to be obsolete, hollow, redundant, outdated, primitive, of no tangible/or sentimental value and worst it is believed to carry negative connotations. The termed was coined by Dayaks jungle tracker while pursuing the terrorist in the 60s (source: Apai Jinggut, the most feared tracker during colonial era) now used by the military personnel. Literally it meant fight till the last breath. Taken out of context or for those not of Dayak origin it also meant one has to fight/ngelaban his own people, his own family, his gomen, his party, his associate, his friends or just anybody.

Don’t forget when one fight/ngelaban not “alang-alang” until the end, in short no room for compromise. This is bad for the modern day society. Another possible negative connotation of the battle cry….right or wrong you must fight/ngelaban…..I am afraid this is where the Dayaks stand now & tend to loss out. When BN rule we must fight….later when PR takes we must also fight because remember we are still alive. Now we are fighting Taib…..but (I say but) when Baru Bian becomes CM we surely continue to fight/ngelaban again because we are not yet dead. So when we stop fighting/ngelaban? Infinity?!!!!

Really I do not know whether this can be taken as a curse, where the Dayaks need to fight throughout out their life time.

    Nya aja kaban.

    US,

I’m taken by your observation, when you point to the results of all previous election, which saw that Dayak had rallied behind BN; and therefore – from an academic point of view – the community is politically united, even though they may not be congregating in one political party.

But all the same, as you had pointed out – Dayak political power appear to have been neutered and the community appear to be unable to fend for themselves.

Example when many NCR land has been taken by dubious mean by irresponsible individuals and groups, as has been painstakingly documented by SarawakReport, no Dayak (politic or community) leaders dare to breath a word. The same can be said about the lose of religious right to use the world Allah. And the list can go on.

I think this observation beg the question of: will the situation be exactly similar if the Dayak community were to rally behind PR and vote PR to administer the Federal and State govt ?

    Maybe not.

What I have tried to hint at in my previous posting is that, when we talk about Dayak politics, we don’t necessarily mean political party. What we mean is the broader definition of politics, as being the process and method of decision making by a group (in this case Dayak).

To be united politically, does not mean we don’t quarrel. To my mind, it means we would have the “process and method” for doing so, without diminishing the group political strength, in relation to the rest.

Indeed, a genuine evidence of “political” unity in the Dayak community, will be when folks from different political party, can leave their politics at the door, when discussing Dayak socio-economic-political interest.

Lest people misunderstood me: we have to stay clear of ethnocentricity, even when we desire to see Dayak united in their political cause. It just so, that at this time, the Dayak are still distinguishable as a group – and should naturally have common political mission, vision (e.g rural development) -in order to progress with the rest.

Now, will it be any easier for Dayak to be united politically, according to the measure that I propose, within Pakatan system of governance or within the BN system ?

I think it depends on whether BN can reform itself, and whether Pakatan would keep their promise, not only to be non-racial but would sincerely $desire to see Dayak rise.Ultimately, it depends on the Dayak, especially the new generations who may find it easier to cast aside the primitive behaviour of our present generation: and compete and collaborate at the same time – with good humour.

    Hello Kaban semua,

Judging from the tone of postings by DBs for the past couple of months it’s obvious that they are distancing themselves from PKR. Some even refused to associate themselves with the party/personality they once placed a high hope on.

Or are they throwing the towel even before the electoral battle begin? Some prefer “Atas Pagar”, while other prefers to look and see. But believed me, the turn of event in SNAP must have significant bearing on the waning support and interest shown to PKR.

Perhaps Unggal CA can enlighten us on these phenomena. Why ,why and why the cold response toward PKR (unlike before)? Is this strategic move or part of the bigger scheme in preparation for post-Taib era? Lets hope so !!!!

Hello Kaban! Thanks in advance for take note:

Akik Hawong and UMNO are both in dillemma now.

UMNO is asking Akik Hawong to play-acting either to prop-up Parti SNAP, PCM, Kita with RM540,000 starter pack funds and already long time Akik Hawong receiving business contract in oil palm business with UMNO agent Felcra.

The UMNO deal also including to plant as many calon bebas spoiler under Akik Hawong supervision to as many Dayak seats wherever PKR and SNAP contested, as the PKR, SNAP insider spies reported back to Akik Hawong.

But counter-intelligence report revealed that Akik Hawong instead double-cross UMNO in siphoning much of the funds given to himself.

Looks like Akik Hawong still addicited to his old habit – makan duit parti. Ahh..old habit die hard lah kaban! Not done with that, Akik Hawong now actively looking for extra funds for his personal glory vs. his own uncle in betong akik jabu for DUN Layar seat.

Very cunning this Akik Hawong, not enough with UMNO funds now looking other fools’ money to cheat too.

As for his PRS boss akik Jemot masing, he is using Akik Hawong blog(even linked here WTF!) to knock down SUPP, Larry Sng, akik taib timber cronies and here in DayakBaru whacking fellow kaban Dayaks nonstop.

Akik Hawong really happy now that his UMNO friends at ROS agreed to his request to re-activate SNAP another lease of life, apparently like placing Bubu at river to trap and fool the Dayaks into joining SNAP the UMNO Bubu booby trap.

Sadly only those old timer Dayak goons are fooled, not the younger Dayaks as Akik Hawong hoped to fool initially.

Time is running out for Akik Hawong to convince UMNO the trap is working and that’s why he drumming up SNAP here too. Now Akik Hawong requesting more funds from UMNO to do the same trick, planting spies in PCM, Kita and more spies in PKR Sarawak.

Yes more money but in the end only for personal profit to Akik Hawong quest to topple own uncle akik jabu like crazy. Just as crazy as his boss akik jemot masing to kick out Larry sng.

UMNO also in dilemma, they cannot enter Sarawak unless the Dayaks agreed with the Malays always ready to hug them.

So now UMNO just wait and see how good Akik Hawong can throw the spanner, fooling, spying, sabotage, trick, mess up the Dayak political unity using whatever means and funds provided earlier.

When the road is cleared by Akik Hawong, then UMNO have valid excuse to enter Sarawak and using sulaiman as front man to rule us all once again next 100 years.

So Akik Hawong, swear you are UMNO cocksucker or you’re still a virgin!

That’s all for now kaban! Thanks in advance for take note! Cheers!

DPC is not only certain to defend the Layar seat but he will win by a comfortable majority in the coming state polls.

On the opposition camp Stanny Embat of PKR has been moving on the ground for quite sometime. He is committed and determined unfortunately his “light weight” tag has not improved and thus far failed to create meaningful impact. Contrary to a common believed and as claimed by Stanny, PKR is yet to make inroad in this Dayaks majority constituency.

Then, comes this the-so-called Financial Consultant Joe Unggang who claimed resigning from his job to contest on SNAP ticket in Layar. After reading some of the comments posted here alone i cant help wondering if we are ever going to be united and strong as a race and politically. Not in a thousand years !!

While most offer constructive views, others are “spoilers” at best. Some appear to have an overdose of that “Agi idup agi ngelaban” spirit, and worse, they ngelaban bansa diri, spitting out venomous adjectives, discriminating against those from other areas, other divisions, other “ai”. Freedom of Expression !? Heck !

So wither Iban unity?,….if we tend to differentiate between each other. We are already seriously divided and pitted against each other as it is, to retard our progress as a race and politically.

On one side lavished the blessed and endowed among our people,….the self-enriching cronies and disciples of the BN government. And they would never ever allow you to bother or slaughter their “goose that lay the golden eggs”. And they, with their own spirit of “Agi idup agi ngelaban” will fight tooth and nail to protect it.

And on the other side,in utter desperation, rage the rest of our people, bewildered and frustrated with what the elected government is doing, or more rightly, not doing for them, gritting their teeth and whispering into the dead of night in the ruais in the ulus, pounding tables in coffee-shops in rural bazaars,….they pray that their OWN people on the other side, in the government, would find their ears and listen to their grouses and look at the calamity their race is in and join them in propping it up, back to its former glory.

And as of this moment, their prayers are still unanswered,……

After reading some of the comments posted here alone i cant help wondering if we are ever going to be united and strong as a race and politically. Not in a thousand years !!
    ——————————————————————————————————–

Blogging in Internet is like trying to have a conversation in a fish market, with lots of detraction from vendors shouting for customers attention ! Ignore the noise, then you can get some genuine ideas.

Anyway, for many of us looking from the outside, its quite pitiful to see the small Dayak group fighting each other with everything at their disposal, just to eke out a “power base” (but which is ultimately only a sedekah by the bigger fishes swimming in the pond).

In the foreseeable future, the MP and ADUN seats that the Dayak would normally be allocated from either BN or Pakatan is marginal (not commensurate with the size of Dayak population) and therefore numerically would not be enough to change the political equation.

Therefore, in a rational political system – one would imagine any small group like Dayak would be driven to work together to achieve bigger things which can never be achieved alone.

The advent of civil society – NGOs etc, among Dayak will establish fabrics of unity when each, driven by specific social need – will seek friends of like mind. If the politicians from Dayak majority political party can mirror the action of the Dayak NGOs, then the seed for collaboration is can be sowed.

At this moment, even members of Dayak-majority political parties within BN are not collaborating.
The uneasiness of some PKR folks viz SNAP is another example from the other side.

Unlike Muslims who yearns to be united as a matter of religious duty (in the name of the Muslim Umma),Dayak do not have such concept to compel them to feel as if they are rowing in the same boat. Each Dayak individual politician would tend to be unapologetically selfish.

So the likely path for “political unity” to bloom for Dayak, is likely to be triggered either by the new generations yielding to the rationality of teamworking – in order to succed, or by tapping into some form of latent racism to fire up the Dayak crowd.

Whatever the path(s), maybe – from the perspective of the political outsiders, the Dayak would do themselves much justice by being united, in their purpose. Of course, theoretically – it helps everyone else as well, if Dayak would prosper from by being politically united.

The fact that we can envision certain condition for Dayak political unity to thrive, means there is still hope !

I congratulated someone recently but he refused to take the credit for marginalising Dayak, including BN Dayak. He dodged the credit and push it to his ‘YDK’.

    Others,
I think in 10 years to come, UMNO will remain as Msian politics trend-setter.Like it or not,as minority in Malaysia, we have to use a lot of ‘Dayakism”. Unless of course, UMNO kick the natural bucket or Sarawak got kick out of Malaysia.

    Poor me!

  96. CharcoalArt on January 21st, 2011 8:26 am

    Ugly Face

Totally agree with you there! PKR or PAS may be able to weaken UMNO but not enough to beat the united Malays.

We don’t even have united Dayaks. Without Dayakism what would become of Dayaks? May be for tourist attraction – the orang asli of Sarawak.

We are DB still vote for change we must…Cheeerr KIB

  98. Raja Gerasi on January 21st, 2011 9:56 am

    Brother CA…agree with you.

Also dayaks in the next 10 years with the continuous rule of BN will be totally assimilated as what our brother gkm2020 said, hence all Dayaks will only be good in the Museum glass for Tourist Attraction.

After the next 10 years almost all NCR land will be disappeared….many Dayaks will be landless so many will come to work in Malaya to replace Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Myanmar and Indonesian as labourers in the factories and construction industries. It is already started now where we have about 40,000 Dayaks in Malaya, mostly as labourers.

As suggested by Joseph Entulu…word “Dayak” should be dropped but a more positive word “Malaysian home grown labourer” should be used.

Latest in the labour market now, Bangladesh Government due to many ill treatment of their citizens by Malaysian Labour Supply Agents is slowly restricting its citizen in coming to Malaysia. The numbers are in thousands. Indonesian government are doing the same for the domestic maids already.

Hence the vacuum shall be replaced by “Malaysian home grown labour” from where, you all know best….Of course this is the greatest achievement by Malaysian Government in deed to resolve the labour issue in Malaysia and also keep the money back in Malaysia.

Akih Hawong and KOW will this a welcome news to you now???? Are you more happy with this BN greatest achievement????

    Ugly Face and CharcoalArt:

    In Non-election time:
    ———————
From 100 politician, perhaps 1 or 2 can be rational enough to work with political adversary -in the best interest of the Dayak community.

    During Election time:
    ———————
Supporters of Dayak politician would be whipped into a frenzy during election time, and want their political foes head for breakfast …

Dayak voters eyes .. in kedai kopi and kaki lima would glitter, and they would be animated.. to root for their favourite… like fans of English Premier League football

    Conclusion:
    ———–
For that reason the rational path to reconfigure Dayak politics – to be small but to swim in formation – will probably take another 100s of years.

The difference between rational politicking and Dayakism is best expressed by some partying friends in my younger days as

“candy is dandy … but liquour is faster” (to get the girl to bed).

Dayakism has potential but as the reverse of what James Bond’s said “stir, not shaken” – or the girl will be intoxicated.

(Apology to all ladies out there … can’t think of a better metaphore)

The third alternative, is to follow Silvester Entrie and convert: then we all can be united under the Ummah … and who, knows by 2nd and 3rd generation there would be Dayak (the definition that exclude Melanau) CM and Governor, to rule the roost, and to keep all Dayak Abdullah united.

(No offense to relatives and friends who are god-fearing Muslim)

The situation is not hopeless – if we can put our heads together. Let the folks slug it out to win the coveted YB title, but in parallel track – people can build high-value linkage across political parties – for a bipartisan thinking shop…. in the best interest of Dayak and humanity

    “Stir, not shaken …”

  100. gkm2020 on January 21st, 2011 11:07 am

    My thought of the day.

    WHY “DAYAK UNITY MOVEMENT”?

Unity @Beserakup is one of the main key factors which decide the success and growth of any particular community or organization or nation. There are many advantages of Unity.

A focus, progressive and positive Unity work can really help boost the output rate of our community.

    Enti ukai saritu, Kemaya?
    Enti ukai pagila, Kemaya?
    Enti ukai taun tu, Kemaya?
    Enti ukai nuan, Sapa?
    Enti ukai kitai, Sapa?
    Enti ukai Dayak, Sapa?

Unity is a holistic and social service movement and this Unity is not only for Dayak Ibans but for all indigenous Dayaks in Sarawak as a first step, and later could spread up to the Sabah state and the Kalimantan provinces in Indonesia.

“Dayak Unity Movement” is all about empowering “Angkatan Bangsa Dayak Borneo” as “Dayak” who are increasingly faced with threats to their Native rights, adat and sovereignty, environment, and access to natural resources..

Unity is about everybody coming together as “One Big Family” or “One Big Brotherhood”! A gigantic force of peoples with strong voices empowering strong communities.

The core idea of Unity is to bring people together in diversity and creating awareness of the realworld environments (Politics; Economics; Social; Technology; Law & Justice; Environmental issues; Human Rights, Native Rights and the relevant as promoted by the United Nations; Financial Resources & Capacity; Alliance & Networking; and Development Growth Systems) against their disadvantages and to end injustice.

There are also disadvantages of Unity, which, if not handle well, can really ruin the growth of a community and/or an organization.

To move forward, we need to construct some sort of “Dayak Unity Movement Council” as a proposed avenue. And who can promote this? “U” (technically “U” mean we – You and Me).

What Unity vehicle? Any registered vehicle under the law; NGO, Political Party, Philanthropic Organization – House of Worships, Union, Club and/or Association.

The factors that are responsible for the bad Unity organization are listed below:

The promoters and/or the counseling of members of the Unity is very important and if the selection of members is not done in an excellent manner, then Unity might actually bring more conflict, thereby harming the community teams and/or the organization in general. Unity is not “Disunity”.

One of the factors leading to possible “Bad Unity” or “Useless Unity” is that the Unity members do not participate as much everyone does, not focus on the core agenda and pursing conflicts of personal interests (either they in bring their political ideology or personal interest or racial and religious extremism, and of course “old habit hard to die mentality”) and others may includes; continuously selfish discrediting one another and/or demoralizing others or breaking the moral momentum.

Some members have their attitude problems and for which the Unity itself has to suffer. Some members become too individualistic for their own good and egocentric or self-centered “Me and it’s always Me, and Just Me”.

As a result Unity is compromised and the Unity simply becomes a collection of individuals and/or parties working and looking out for himself/herself. Unity is not about the “Me” but “US” (United we Stand).

So, proper care should be taken while you are selecting members for particular “Dayak Unity Movement”.

Some of the important solutions for bad Unity are as follows:

    1. The behavior of each and every member of the Unity should be reviewed. Just take a reading in some of the comments herein this forum.

Some members may have attitude problems for which the Unity has suffered. If necessary, a recommendation from peers and/or supervisory committees may be sought for this purpose.

    2. Probably the most important ingredient of building Unity is effective Command, Control, Communication, Coordination, Cooperation and Tolerance (CT5).

If the medium of CT5 is not right, then it may harm the total output of the Unity itself. CT5 between the Unity members is very important and it should be simple enough so that it is carried out efficiently and effectively without interfering with the work being done.

    3. Unity brings different people who will be having different opinions, intelligence, experiences, expertise, culture, adat and religious faith regarding a particular topic.

The opinions might clash and proper care should be taken, so that the proper decision can be taken for the solution of any particular problem in spite of the differences in opinion.

    4. Each person should be given the responsibility for handling a proper situation. If all members will interfere in every aspect of the work being done, then it may lead to ruin the output of the Unity.

These are the facts that you should look at while concerning about “Beserakup Kitai Teguh, Bepecah Kitai Labuh” or else your “Dayak Unity Movement” (is Unity of Hope) can lead the way to downward. So be cautious while choosing good Unity members.

NOTES: There is no lateness in building up Unity, it’s the desire to build one that lead to Unity success. If you lose hope, you’ll remain hopeless. If you give up, you will remain helpless. If you blame the past, there is no tomorrow. Unity is a struggle to both social and political correctness. Unity is a way to move out from many disadvantages; poverty, racial discrimination, social injustice, political corruption, etc.

    Thanks for the reading.

    •N7 SEMARIANG (13498) Sharifah Hasidah bte.Sayeed Aman (BN-PBB)

PBB is reported to be dropping no less than 10 incumbents YBs in the coming state polls. However my checked with PBB inner circle suggested that Sharifah is not one of them and is set to defend her Semariang seat. Semariang has always been PBB/BN stronghold and ground information thus far suggest incumbent should be able to retain the seat albeit with reduce majority.

Her likely opponent is the newly appointed State PKR Woman Chief…………… Though having shared the same bed I must admit not much is known about this lady other than being a graduate from Australia and come from a respectable Kuching-Malay family.

My take: YB Sharifah should be able to renew BN “fixed deposit” for the next five years in Semariang. It is said the Malays voters in Semariang only recognized the “dacing” symbol and none others. Same PBB source hinted that YB Sharifah may be appointed Assistant Minister after the state polls.

“Malaysian home grown labour” i like the concept mention by raja gerasi. in such a way many dayak will be migrated to peninsular an become a factories and constructions labourers. the more the better, let them see the world and gain experience.

well,in the past it used to be dayaks are known to be proud of showing his “bejalai”ordeal, the elders used to tell us they have been to brunei, api-api, tawau and many more interesting places while seeking employment neither then labourer. as a prove they proudly shown their tattoos of wild beast, bungai terong, snake, and sometimes naked women. they will tell a lot of interesting stories about their meaning of thier tattoos.

well, don’t get me wrong brother! or i m not down graded them
but look at its from the positive side, if they are many dayaks working in peninsular malaysia, they can form a political party called, “Kongress Party Of Dayak Labour” or known as “KOPOD”. may be the dayak luck in politic and Unity are better overseas. i don’t know.

Hello again kaban! Not trying to be anti-climax with sad news here but show must go on:

Here’s another proof that PRS goons slowly under UMNO control: converted Dayak YB Efendi Abdullah (visit Sarawak Report ok!) and explains why his fellow PRS YB Joseph Entulu aka. Yusuf Ulu also proposed earlier to drop the term ‘Dayak’ which was done to impress UMNO only. Looks like PRS taking order from UMNO!

UMNO is using PRS as Dayak agents to spread its wing in Sarawak indirectly and PRS must tell and convince Dayak to accept UMNO in Sarawak. On other hand, UMNO quietly trying to unite all the PBB renegades under Sulaiman supervision.

UMNO cannot deal with PBB because akik taib know UMNO is threat to his power but UMNO will use his deluded frustrated angry son Sulaiman to revolt against his dad. UMNO and Sulaiman will tell Sarawak malays that new BN Sarawak is better under them, not akik taib anymore. With PRS support it is an icing on the UMNO’s cake.

PRS is the Dayak UMNO or Cawangan UMNO Dayak Sarawak (CUDS, at least not sounds like SCUD missile saddam lah).

Akik Hawong is next to show and swear allegiance to UMNO. Akik Hawong shall play-acting to defy own party PRS and become Calon Bebas to fight his uncle akik jabu the raja kepayang. Akik Hawong will claim more money and minister post if he can defeat akik jabu good jod done for UMNO.

So to all my fellow kaban here listen: stop supporting, voting for PRS BN anymore. It is very clear now, sudah terang lagi bersuloh, PRS = Pembelot Rakyat Sarawak = Ukoi UMNO!

    Unggal Akih Hawong,

Please do what you think best with regard to your political agenda if it’s for the majority Dayaks. Do your part, I’ll do mine. We all have our own social responsibility.

“Dayak Unity” will remain a hot topic as part of Dayaks’ agenda even after the election is gone. It doesn’t matter who “Win” or “Lose” but Dayaks’ must “Win” their rights!

Unity is for a Change; its aim is to create a unified foundation for Dayaks where each different group is equally included and not one single person is unfairly excluded. In order to realize our ultimate potential for success all Dayaks must harmoniously work together cooperatively to achieve common goals.

    To DB readers,

DAYAK UNITY IS NOT A SONG!

To me, it is a “Dayak Unity Movement” that plays a key role in every Dayaks’ agenda. There are plenty of agendas within this movement because it does include “Dayak Unity Vote”. It is designed to encourage all level of Dayaks to exercise their right to vote. Those who oppose “Dayak Unity” are dividers?

“Dayak Unity Vote” is revitalized an extensive national effort to mobilize the Native voters in collaboration with all Dayaks’ community grassroots leadership, their regional political organizations and non-governmental organizations.

The “Dayak Unity Vote” is a campaign mode working closely with regional organizations, native court leaders (Tuai Rumahs, Penghulus, Pemanchas, etc including Ex-Chiefs, Ex-counselors, Pensioners, etc), the youth and rural/urban Dayak centers to create a strong and permanent infrastructure for election training that highlights voter registration, election protection policies, and Native mobilization.

Herein let me hint you with some of the basic “Dayak Unity Vote” objectives:

    1. Vote to protect and safeguard “Native Rights” not for politicians personal portfolio rights.
    2. Vote out “Corruption & Injustice”.
    3. Vote out “Assimilation Policies”.
    4. Vote for “Native Land Titles” and “Native Act”.
    5. Vote for “Native E5” (Equity, Equality, Economics, Education & Employment)
    6. Vote for selected a new Native leadership.
    7. Vote for “Change WE Must” and to recognize the word “Dayak” for Native.
    8. Vote for “Reformation” that could benefit all Dayaks, and rural Native tax relief.
    9. Vote for “Sarawak Rights” including the recall and reformation “Sarawak Ranger” ceremonial functions. (If Johor can have their own “Royal Johor Military Force” then why can’t Sarawak as written in the Cobbold Commission Report 1963 have one?). Thus creating more employment for Dayaks.
    10. Vote for retaining “Aum Kapit Resolution 1962”.
    11. Vote for “for unity and cooperation among Native communities for the protection of their treaty and sovereign rights”.
    12. Vote for encouraging policies for “Native Self-Governance” and “Self-Determination”.
    13. Vote for “Native Court Power & Jurisdiction”.
    14. Vote out “Authoritarian Leadership”.
    15. Vote to monitor both Federal and State policies and coordinated efforts to inform federal/state decisions that affect Dayaks’ interests.
    16. Vote to serves to secure for ourselves and our descendants the rights and benefits to which we are entitled.
    17. Vote to enlighten the public toward the better understanding of the Dayak people.
    18. Vote to preserve rights under Aum Kapit 1962 and Sarawak treaties or agreements with the Federation of Malaysia.
    19. Vote to promote the common welfare of the Natives.
    20. Vote for Protection of Dayak cultural resources, intellectual property rights, Dayak Trademarks, and religious freedom rights.
    21. Vote to support of environmental protection and natural resources management.
    22. Vote for promotion of the Rights of Dayak economic opportunity both urban and rural areas, including securing programs to provide incentives for economic development and the attraction of private capital to the Dayak communities.
    23. Vote for Dayak youth and their next generation sustainability.
    24. Vote for a strong adat governance (longhouse/village/organization/government) as a key effective to Dayaks’ political, social and economic development.
    25. Vote to urge the government and state public Universities to deem the Dayak students & potential students exempt from “systematic quota admission” in regards to scholarships/funding & admissions.
    26. Vote to establish a “Dayak Negotiated Rulemaking Committee” for the purpose of developing changes to the NEP, ETP, GTP, etc on national level.
    27. Vote for “Dayak School” and “University College”, “Dayak Community College” to cater Dayak youth Form 3 & 5 dropouts and illiterate natives.
    28. Vote for “Blue IC” for all Dayaks.
    29. Vote for Dayak many disadvantages since the last 47 years under BN ministration.
    30. Vote to recommend and monitor the progress of establishing a Dayak Disability Liaison Office within the Office of Public Liaison of both the State and the Federal Government.
    31. Vote to establish a “Dayak Elders Council” to evaluate & determine the appointment and selection of Native Chiefs via Adat and/or Native Court Supreme Council.
    32. Vote to pursue legislative alternatives to curtail this project and to further protect the confidentiality of Native grave sites, sacred sites, heritage sites and cultural resources.
    33. Vote for project licensing conditions necessary to protect trust rights and interests of the Native and purposes of the Native Settlement and/or Reservation in the areas affected by Government development.
    34. Vote to recognize the significant need for collaboration & the development of partnership in improving educational services & creating and transforming curriculum for the purpose of preserving & revitalizing Native languages & cultures and calls upon the state/federal government to increase funding for tribal language recovery.
    35. Vote to grossly unjust and dishonorable for one Dayak tribe to be compensated while a similarly-affected neighboring Dayak tribe is not, and that the federal/state government breached its trust obligations for help the needy Dayaks.

I have plenty more points but would leave it here for a moment, and continue our discussion further later.

    Lastly

Dayak Unity Voters’ action can be turned into collective action for “Change WE Must”. Unity is the strongest weapon “Bansa Dayak” have in the struggle to advance their interests.

    My candid questions:

    1. Can you “Win” when you’re politically divided OR can you “Win” if you’re always divided?
    2. What do you think if “Dayak Unity Vote” is promoted and secured, would you see it influential enough to swing “Change”?
    3. Would “Dayak Unity Vote” be able to produce unique challenges and strenuous conditions for voters?

    raja gerasi,

you sound like too emotional and lose of hope, what is bothering you so much. don’t you see its. it was our forfather, our paramout chiefs and political leaders that shown and lead us to be a “good constructions and factories labourers”. don’t you feel proud of it?

well, the untold history of the dayaks can be traced back from khmer or today known as cambodia, from there we are imigrated to Java, because of the ill-treated, there we are mostly like a slave. to seek a greener pasture we imigriated to the Java Island and at that same time under Majapahit empire. there too we become a slave. because of the unbearable conditions our forefather imigirated to borneo, in short what we are today.

well, by comparing the past and the present situation and condition of the dayak, raja gerasi. to me we are not much different, only here we are not a slave, but it is appropriate too if you feel in such a way or implying by the situation at the moment.

then also history repeated it again, we imigirated to peninsular to seek employment as a general labour in the factory and construction sites. don’t you feel proud of its, from Slave in the past to the unskilled and semi-skilled labourer. well, the condition is slightly better. and the situation too, is very much better, there in peninsular the dayak knew, “WHAT IS THE TRUE MEANING of unity”. it seem there is a super natural cause that lead and open up thier hearts.

who knows in the future our brothers and sisters in the named of dayakhood with the increasing number by day in and at the overseas, when they read my article here will catalyst and put up an inisiative to, set up a political party called, “Dayak Labour Party” or “DALAP” the odd is big, but the probability is there.

do you know what it means Raja Gerasi? if not than the table is turning to you and you can have the 17 cans of beer, and please handed over your “ambar mati” for safe keeping or future use.

The history of the world in some other country proven that at the end, people will unite and the good example is Jews after being exile and scatted all over the world, finally they united and back to their land called ISREAL which was theirs right from the beginning, same goes to IBAN/DAYAK, whatever your GODFATHER and your YDK together will all their companies, cronies have taken from DAYAK today, BELIEVE me KOW, just write in your history book, all these LAND shall be returned back to the originator and the true owner.

in this manner, i would like to challenge, if you are or anybody really know better the “History And The Origin Of The Dayak”, let tell us, we would like to here it first hand.

there is no point calling somebody, “bullshit” or sucker, unless you are taught to be in such a way in your family or your immediate family, which is very dangerous, and to retaliation or counter back, i can call you back, Linut Mulong as an “idiot” but i don’t call you in such a way. the best solution is you just mend a broken heart and lead, tell, unite the divisions of dayak to a better end.

i guess major engkerawai and ulgyFace shared the same view with me. raja gerasi are you still thinking about the “Bipolar Effect?” well, once in a while we do get the bipolar effect. no harm.

  115. MERAMAT TAJAK on January 22nd, 2011 7:15 pm

Sharing 3 Thoughts on Political Blogging

    1. Think of yourself as representative of the political party and group that you advocate

If you advocate for Pakatan Rakyat, what you say,how you say it – will affect how people perceive Pakatan Rakyat. Now if you substitute “Pakatan Rakyat” with “Barisan National, SNAP,PKR,………even DAYAK ..”, the effect is the same. If you do it in a way thats not honest, then people will automatically generalise that the group or political party you advocate are dishonest people.

    2. In the modern world, falsehoods can be easily debunked, sooner or later.

From World War II, right up to the Cold War, propaganda was used extensively to confuse the enemy.

In those days, when information does not travel at godspeed, and unlike today when everyone with a handphone can be a source of news, public opinion can be shaped with smoke signal – disinformation.

Today, except in the remotest part of Sarawak, informaton flows in multiple direction.

Even when Mainstream Media would try very hard to put up one-sided, rosy story favouring Barisan National, the alternative media would still reach their own faithful readers.

And by some estimates, the readership of alternative media are increasing at the expense of sliding readership among MSM newspapers like Utusan, Star and News Straits Times.

So it make no sense to use propaganda, or to deliberately dispense half-truths, to advocate ones position.

    3. Communication 101 fundamental would say effective communication requires you know who you are addressing.

Who are likely readers of DayakBaru ?

I like to imagine all the readers are critical thinkers and I would be careful with my word to try to live to the high standards that the readership must surely demand.

If we think about it, our blogging is also a method by which we learn to argue constructively and with honor, and to set good example for future generation (those kids in the Facebook who may be curious and peep into the posting in this weblog).

When I felt tempted to reply with passion and emotion, I would be restrained and mellowed when I imagine what impression such action would create in the readers.

In some case,it would add spice to the “conversation” when people would post with emotions and with the usual sly antics that attack the individuals, not the message.

But as long as we don’t burn the bridge, I think thats fine. If we quarrel and stop “talking” to each other, then that’s a waste of brain cell.

At any rate: if we agree our readers are smart people, who would be disdainful if we make a fool of ourselves, then we should be guarded in how we express our disagreement and contempt for the other guys.

AKIH ‘the druggie’ HAWONG…. TO MIND YOUR OWN BLOG.

Just like any other DBs, we wonder who this Akih “the druggie” Hawong is. He has been here and there, talking nonsense to bring us backward. By looking at the points in his comments we know that he is a Senior Exco of PRS. He is not just a senior member as we also know that he is truly an opportunist. He would like to take every opportunity coming before him for survival. His experience in as an Ex-Special Branch Intelligent Unit helps him towards this end.

He is here with us just to neutralize ourgenuine efforts to see and make same progressive changes for the Dayak. But, this AKIH ‘the druggie” Hawong, is always embarrassing his ABS (Ahli Botol Stout) title conferred by the government. What a shame! People are getting their titles for their outstanding deed. Sadly, in your case, you got it courtesy of your efforts as opportunist.

1.Taking Good Advantage of the Dayak plight: We are now sure that Akih’ the druggie’ Hawong is a THE kind of Iban who has no hesitation to kill off fellow Ibans. He does not care whether the deed has negative repercussions on the Dayak Ibans. What is of top priority to him is his own pocket and his bank accounts. He is not the only one. The SPDP councilor in my area is also having a similar penchant. Had he not been appointed by our Iban YB, he would not be getting that position. As you and I know, it is a common practice for the ball polishers like, Akih Hawong and the appointed councilors to secure MRPs from government. This is what they want! This is what they considered as development in so far as the Ibans are concerned.

AND this is the sort of Ibans who must not exist in our Dayak Iban society.

    2. Taking care of your Own Blog: Akih the druggie Hawong, you better take care of your own blog. I have visited your blog quite regularly just to check if there is something. I found out that it is rather quite. The discussion is not that fruitful and hardly inspiring. Your articles are truly a kind of ball polishing. I observe that you have a serious oversight with regards to the Dayak Iban problems. You have deliberately decided to ignore them, sweeping them under the carpet and pretending that all is in perfect order. You shall not be like that, my friend!
As such, you better take care of your own blog. It is a kind of a yardstick of your influence over our Dayak Iban people. The lack of response and absence of concrete discussion testify that your ideas and knowledge in highlighting the Dayak issues are not that acceptable.

Therefore, my friend, please take good care of your blog.

In the meantime please enjoy your drug and stop being an opportunist as we still can survive by helping each other.

    Cheers…

My thought for this beautiful Sunday (23/1/2011):

As SNAP was one of the signatories to the 18 -points agreement (as claimed by Stanley Jugol), Sarawakian are therefore duty-bound to give full support for the local-based party to enforce the said agreement.

When meeting Dayaks intellectuals last night Jugol mentioned in no uncertain terms that SNAP will give the 18-Points Agreement its priority once in power. For that very reason he appealed to all Dayaks voters statewide to give the party a chance in the coming state polls.

MY TAKE: Those who refused to back SNAP with their noble mission are hypocrites to the core and traitors to the community

    Nya aja kaban.

    MY TAKE FOR TODAY…

Oooh… I’m not so sure about the claim that SNAp was one of the signatories to the 18 point-agreement.

Was it Stephen Kalong Ningkan of SNAP or could it be Jugah Barieng of PESAKA?

Please enjoy your drug this weekend!

    Hello kaban semua,

Again to clear the air and for the benefits of those who are not in the know or disputed SNAP’s role in the formation of Malaysia esp. on the signing of the 18-points agreement Stanley Jugol called and asked that his press statement on 21/1/11 (pertaining to the subject matter) be posted here.

    ==============================================

Jugol pointed out that SNAP was a signatory to the Malaysia Agreement by which Sarawak and Sabah agreed to join the Federation of Malaysia.

“Without SNAP’s consent, Sarawak would not have joined the federation,” he said.

“Today, SNAP still prays for the fulfilment of the agreement. Our political records show that Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore joined Malaya to form the Federation of Malaysia on equal footing on Sept 16, 1963″.

With the above clarification I hope no right thinking Sarawakian should questioned SNAP’s povital role in the 18- points agreement.

    Nya aja kaban.

“History And The Origin Of The Dayak”, let tell us, we would like to here it first hand.

KOW, I always ask you tu learn more about Nation Building.

This is part of Nation Building. Can you ask sufficient budget from BN to sponsor the History Expertise studying the “History and The Origin of The Dayak”. If you cannot, pls do not ask again.

Nobody know the real Dayak History and the Dayak Origin without doing a proffesional study.

As a Kerani Opis Walfare, you should able to ask your self not DB, why BN refuse to sponsor sufficient money for conducting this study?

290 Billion Ringgit of sabah-Sarawak income from Oil and Gas only within 3 years is more than enought to conduct this study.

    Akih Hawong,

I refer to your comment dated on January 23rd, 2011 11:57 am

Since you know “Stanley Jugol” personally, please print full facts and details of that “18 points Agreement” which show a SNAP representative is a signature to the “Malaysia Agreement” here in this blog and/or published it any local newspapers and/or alternative media.

    My candid question:

If SNAP do play a key role in Sarawak independence with Malaya to form “MALAYSIA”, why was SNAP President (Stephen Kalong Ningkan) not invited to sign the “Malaysia Agreement”?

Looking forward to seeing it here soon; seeing is believing. Thank you.

  125. gkm2020 on January 23rd, 2011 2:54 pm

    Dear DB readers,

To my research studies, SNAP only draw a plan for a Federation of Malaysia with the following points:

    1. Head of State

To be called Rajah; to be from one of the indigenous races; and to be elected by the people of Sarawak.

    2. Head of Federation

Each Head of State in the new Federation to be eligible for nomination in rotation as Head of the Federation.

    3. Boundaries

No alteration of boundaries of any State, especially between Sarawak, Brunei and North Borneo.

    4. Customary and Land Rights

Preservation of both to remain a State responsibility.

    5. Language

Malay to be accepted as the national language in Malaysia but Iban to be one of the secondary languages. English to remain the official language not only in Sarawak but also in the new Federation for at least 15 years. English also to remain the medium of instruction in schools, provided that the study of other languages is not prevented.

    6. Expatriate Officers

To remain until suitable people from Sarawak can replace them.

    7. State Powers

Adequate constitutional safeguards to ensure that State powers are not changed without the agreement of the State.

    8. Immigration

    To be under State control.

    9. Employment and Scholarship

The indigenous peoples to enjoy the same privileges as the Malays in Malaya, including a fair share of Government employment and of overseas training and scholarships. Preferential treatment for indigenous peoples should not, however, be made “hard and fast”.

    10. Religion

The Constitution of the new Federation to guarantee freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice and propagate any religion freely.

    11. Armed Services

Each State to be permitted to make a fair contribution of manpower to the armed services of Malaysia.

    My wonder:

    1. I began to wonder where are the missing and/or additional seven (7) points?

    2. I began to wonder why the above points not incorporated in the Malaysia Agreements and treaties?

  126. Raja Gerasi on January 23rd, 2011 5:05 pm

    Brother gkm2020,

It looks like there was no proper terms and reference for the four countries, Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore and Federated Malay states in the formation of Malaysia.

So DON’T YOU THINK THAT it is the more REASONS why we Sarawakians and Dayaks in particular to sit down AND REVISIT OUR STATUS IN MALAYSIA?

    Please share.

1.Thank You for your great ideas on dayak unity and dayak besarakup . No meaning at all.

    2. i am sure that such a vision will never be realized.

    3. The Dayak community is too disunited, the leaders are corrupt, immoral, lack vision or has no vision , pursue self interest and personal gratification. The society in large is also sick , palau , nyabong, gila indu and the list of social ills

4.To unite the Dayak must start with a religious reawakeniing, ie to bring themselves closer to God .Many claimed to be christians but only in name , there are many Dayak Leaders or YBS or Ministers but they fear no God, still miring and worship idols terang2 but got christian name lah , engage in gross immoral and corrupt activities , commit audultry – these only make Jesus sick and Vomit blood.

5.fOR THE dAYAK TO MOVE FORWARD, AWAKE Aand unite in the name of Lord Jesus christ.Unity in Christ and politics.
6.The israelites were punished by God for their arrogance and were enslaved for 430 years. The Dayak had been enslaved only for 52 years.

7.God gave the vision for freedom through a God fearing leader Mosses. Our leaders are not god fearing. They do not have Visions for the community. A nation or a race that has no vision will perish or restrain and thats what the Bible says. ( proverb )

    8. Next learn to lead like jesus , not perfect but avoid self interest, community interest first and buka apa untuk saya, berkorban , become a servant leader , take only what is for you ( jesus says what is for ceasar give it to him , what is due for you keep it )

    9. Think seriously about this brother. Preach the Good words. we can progress because in the name of Jesus we are blessed people. Abraham, Solomon, David were all rich, powerful and visionary leaders because they fear God.

    10. WHEN WE ARE LEADERS AND WHEN WE RULE , so much so that we must HAVE the ability and knowledge to lead and unite every citizen. To gain knowledge you must respect God ( Proverb). bOLEH MENANG DAN jadi Ketua Menteri but tak akan kekal.

    11. israelites are God choosen people. But because they disobey God , God punished them ,many times and until now susah.

Well, well, well! Let’s not forget what Akik Jemot masing said during the Ming Court Affair heyday in asking Akik taib to resign (Heh!) while SUPP, SNAP were busy containing the frogs like Gramong Juna, Michael Ben, Holis Tini, David Tiong Chiong Chu, Wilfred Kiroh Jeram, Sim Choo Nam, Edward Jeli but of course except Patau lah:

    —————-

    Accept reality, group tells CM
    Sarawak Tribune, 12 March 1987

KUALA LUMPUR – The group of 28 elected representatives of Bersatu yesterday welcomed Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir’s advice to the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, that the present crisis be handled within the bounds of the State constitution.

Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir was reported as having told the Chief Minister this on Tuesday when he met a delegation of Barisan Nasional leaders from the state at Seri Perdana.

The group also described as “unwise” the calling of a snap state election to solve the crisis.

A spokeman for the group, Dr James Masing of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), said that “in the period of political turmoil, uncertainty and the emergence of polarisation in the state, there is no guarantee that issues detrimental to racial harmony and stability will not be brought forth during an election campaign”

Dr Masing said this in a statement issued at a hotel here which is the group’s temporary base in the city.

The statement was issued after one of its delegations met Umno Youth head Anwar Ibrahim.

Dr Masing said the group wanted to “get down to the business of the government without delay, for any further delay is bound to afffect the welfare of the people.”

He said that since 28 of the 48 state assemblymen had expressed their loss of confidence in Datuk Patinggi Taib, the Chief Minister was constitutionally bound to tender his resignation and allow the group to form a new government.

He reminded the Chief Minister of the meaning of Article 7-1 of the State constitution which states: If the Chief Minister ceases to command the confidence of a majority of the members of Dewan Undangan Negeri, then unless at his request the Yang di-Pertua Negeri dissolves the Dewan Undangan Negeri, the Chief Minister shall tender the resignation of the members of Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri.”

Datuk Taib and company must accept this because this is what the State constitution provides. The Chief Minister should not cling to power when he knows for certain that he has ceased to command the majority support in Council Negeri. If Datuk Taib truly cares for the people of Sarawak, then he must resign forthwith,” he said.

“Bersatu does not wish to wash dirty linen in public nor involve in mud-slinging because this will only bring about bitter recriminations and will not help to solve the problem. We want to get down to the business of government without delay for any further is bound to affect the welfare of the people.” he added.

He said Tun Rahman has denied an allegation that Tengku Razaleigh and himself are the prime movers in the move by Bersatu. “This allegation is part of Datuk Taib’s effort to pit Bersatu against the Prime Minister,” he added.

The Bersatu group and Tun Rahman fully support the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, he said.

    SUPP met to discuss resignations
    Sarawak Tribune, 12 March 1987

SUBANG (Bernama) – The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) was scheduled to meet last night to discuss the reported resignations of four of its State Assemblymen.

SUPP Secretary-General Datuk Dr Wong Soon Kai said yesterday evening there was a possibility of the meeting to institute disciplinary action against the four.

The four are said to be State Assistant Welfare Minister Hollis Tini, David Tiong Chiong Chu (Igan), Wilfred Kiroh anak Jeram (Dudong) and Sim Choo Nam (Engkilili).

Datuk Dr Wong was speaking to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here before leaving for Kuching to attend the meeting.

Also on board his flight was Sarawak National Party (SNAP) Datuk Amar James Wong. The SUPP, SNAP, PBB and PBDS make up the Sarawak Barisan Nasional coalition government.

Datuk Dr Wong said last night’s meeting was also expected to discuss party preparations for a snap state election should the 48-member Sarawak State Assembly be dissolved.

These would include preparing the list of candidates for seats.

Datuk Amar James Wong meanwhile said SNAP was scheduled to meet this Saturday to discuss further development in Sarawak’s political crisis.

The meeting would also probably discuss the action to be taken against its five State Assemblymen who had joined the group of Sarawak state assemblymen demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Haji Taib Mahmud who is also PBB President.

They included SNAP Deputy President Datuk Edward Jeli and Vice President Michael Ben.

Two SNAP State Assemblymen not in the group are Datuk Amar Wong and SNAP Youth leader Dr Patau Rubis (Tasik Biru).
